Default JDM/JSpec motors MANA will be different thread

I am sure someone has already posted one of these so it will probably be a rehash of a known issue.

JDM/JSpec motors are not new motors. This is really one of my peeves, people come in with blown motors and they say that they just had a new motor installed. (This include MANA rebuilds) The main problem with JDM motors is that they are sitting for who knows how long when pulled then they can sit in a container on a ship for 6 months. One of the worst things for a used round motor. Just about every one that I have taken apart has been pretty beat up internally. I refuse to install them.

A little history on Japanese imported low mile motors, 3 year 30,000 mile.
A long time ago in a land far away there was a country that had a terrible pollution problem. Legislation was passed to make it easy and cost effective to trade in old cars. It became cost prohibitive to have to replace all the rubber in a vehicle every three to four years, which included all rubber in a motor.
The Japanese became masters of and were very big into recycling everything do to shortage of raw materials. Everything was recycled into newer vehicles. Bodies, electrical, motors were broken down melted and reused.
There was a Yank visiting the land and saw all these complete low mile motors sitting waiting to be recycled. He was a motor head and found that he could buy these for next to nothing and sell them for a lot in his home land. So he loaded up a container and had it sent here.

Thus began the jspec low mile motors being sold in America. Back then the motors did not sit for a long time before being shipped so they were actually a viable option for American owners of high mile Japanese cars that need motors rebuilt which at the time usually carried a pretty hefty price tag.

Unfortunately the round motors still had the same issue of sitting for a long time. But sometimes with time, atf, and some playing around you could get one to work. Another problem back then was they built up a lot of carbon which dried out and broke away from the rotors causing carbon lock-up, which with some work could still be saved.

Times have changed, it has become big business. Cheaper raw materials from the region, Americans willing to spend make it a profitable business option. Now the motors can sit for a long time, not protected, owner care has gone down. Care is not taken in removal or shipment.

So in conclusion, unless you are going to use the unit for some hardware or educational purposes save your money and either rebuild it yourself with new parts from Ray at Malloy or have a reputable builder make one for you. If you have never built one of these I highly recommend a professional builder.

Great info! I have seen some of the rotary motor swaps on ebay sit for at least 4 months (there has been a 12at motor on there for almost a year).
