Default Low budget upgrades?

I recently bought an 8 and I'm looking to do some mods to increase performance and sound... but I'm in college and have limited resources. Any suggestions?

save money, get Greddy Turbo kit, or 20B swap. =]

Seriously, you can get a header, K&N filter, Eibach springs to drop the ride height a bit, wheel spacers to get the wheels flush (put like 2 or three washers on each stud, then bolt on the wheel, lower car and check fitment, then redo until you get the wheels spaced like you want. Measure the thickness of the washers, and order some 2, 5, 10mm, etc wheel spacers that come close to what you measured...) even with stock wheels, this mod makes the car look better, just don't go to crazy...

Get the windows tinted professionally, shift knob, Steering wheel, seats, cobb acessport is probably the best performance mod you can do for the money, but dont quote me....

I would stay away from the Greddy kit...

Header wont help really and it will be expensive.

You could mod your air box to make it look better, but it wont do anything noticeable for performance. The other options are the AEM or Mazda Speed CAI (same thing, but the MS costs more). Don't expect any more than a couple HP increase.

Exhaust may add 5 or take away 5 HP depending on the pipe... do your research to stay safe. I love my HKS Hi-Power.

Access Port can be used to re-tune you car to run a little more. This will give you a bit more power, but make sure to have someone tune it well.

This car's just not like the 7's. It's pretty stout from the factory for an NA rotary. You're going to spend a lot of money to make this thing fast. I'm having mine bridge ported. That should put me close to 250 to the wheels I would think. Then I'll turbo it later next year. I would recommend the Esmeril turbo if that's the route you want to go in the future, but that's a $6,000 upgrade that's good for up to 400 wheel HP.

If I were to recommend non "performance" things to do with your car, I would have to say...

Short Throw Shifter from AxialFlow Engineering.

Syncro Savers from Fluid Motorsports
Oil Cooler Fan Kits from Fluid Motorsports
https://www.fluidmotorsports.com

Ignition System Upgrade from Esmeril Racing
http://www.esmerilracing.com/

Premix and change transmission and trans-axle fluid out for RedLine products.

I'm sure I could think of more, but that's more or less the main things you should try and do.

Best place for info on this car is still RX8 Club. At least until it turns into RX7 club...

^I agree with red, but save yourself some money and headache and stay away from the Esmeril ignition...get yourself a BHR LS2 coil conversion kit.

Let us know how the bridge comes out. Who's doing the work anyways? I'm looking at doing the same, I think I might have Rotorsports Racing do it, since they are close to me.
