RX8 Dyno

So I finally got some base line numbers on the 8 this past Sat at KDR. Went up there to meet Brian and his FC again and to hang out w/ Dave and see what the shop was all about.

I was pleased with the numbers for a stock RX8 as compared to what I've seen throughout the interweb.

Specs:
2004 w/ 52K on the clock
K&N Drop in
Redline Rear Diff fluid
38psi in all tires
Racing beat wires and brand new NGK plugs

Future plans are to lean out that nasty fuel dump over 7k, add a new clutch (started to slip a little at 7K in 4th), lighter flywheel, headers, AP tuner and some new suspension.

My goal is 200 corrected whp... I think I can get it.

I was hoping you would make this thread. She handled the abuse like a champ, esp that long 18 sec pull. I think you can get there Bill. What did Dave say about gains by leaning out that pig rich @>7k? I think most of the gains can be had there. Does the software allow for any ignition adjustments?

Just making sure, you did pull the ABS fuse right?
From what I've read it's important to do so in order to get a proper dyno read.

200 should be doable without engine mods. I can't wait to get my bridge ported rene back and see what numbers it will put down before I turbo it...

200 with tuning only is doable.

We didnt pull the ABS fuse, but disabled the ABS/DSC system all together. She was accurate alright, lol.

Dave definitely thinks leaning those curves out will pick up a few extra... like you said, the gains will be all up top. He didnt really give numbers, but probably looking at 4 to 5 at around 8000 and up at least... maybe more. I'll need to get an AP tuner and find out. I'm thinking of getting one before any other mods now actually (other than some planned aero and suspension mods).

Those 18 second pulls were great! I think it did the car good, I took her to 95mph today on a quick run and it pulled better than it has before, but than again - I did just do the RB wires and new plugs too...

your biggest gain will come from your header and exhaust setup.

I want to have my car dyno'd (stock 2004 with 35k). WOndering if one type of dyno is better than another for a low torque, high redline car. I am in the Minneapolis area and i think there are two or three choices of shops here.

Typically the dynojets will yield slightly higher numbers than a mustang dyno. Some people say tuning on a mustang dyno is better and more accurate.

The more important factor IMHO is that you use the same dyno throughout the build. This way you know your gains are accurate even if the equipment isnt and your not introducing a different variable into your tuning.

Also, find a good shop. I have dealt with some pretty bad dyno shops and it took a while to find one I liked and trusted.

Would anyone say the RX-8 poses any special requirements for a dyno? THe reason I ask is because I would think the rotary would have a harder time spinning up the drum (low torque) and then showing its best at the high RPM when the HP comes on. I have also noted bigger than expected differences between stock engines - peaking at 8000 rpm vs still pulling when the throttle is cut.

I am hoping to dyno it before mods and then dyno each change - probably engine management first.

Rotary cars may not have a lot of torque but they'll spin the drums just fine. The operator of the dyno will need to disengage the ABS/DSC system though as that can fight the drums during operation.

I have a 2004 base model, so I don't think I need to disable anything?

You'll still need to disable the ABS as far as I know. It's just as easy as pulling a fuse under the hood though... nothing hard.

pulling the abs fuse didnt do much for me, i just had to deactivate the DSC and traction control, otherwise you are fine to dyno
