choke
is there an automatic choke on an 87 rx7. I know its fuel injected and most of them dont have them, but theres gotta be something of the sort
for it to start cold. |

better coolant/water ratio. Better battery. Better oil (or correct viscosity for your temps). That's all I can think of to help you turn your car on in COLD weather (mind you I don't think I've seen anything lower than 30*).

The two systems built for the RX7 and specifically for the FC is the accelerated warm up protocol, and the Cold start system. Both these systems are not that good at doing what they should. Accelerated warm up puts un-needed stress on the engine and the Cold Start System flat out fails. The third system is a standard protocol that all cars have. It's the cranking fuel map. This is based on coolant temperature and will alter the P/w of the injectors for start-up. Ensuring that you have the correct oil, and the proper systems disabled will help you in starting the car.

Check your compression. As well as do a tune up on your car. You may have to adjust the idle, and a few other things here and there. Make sure your TPS is in spec and all the rest. This is a hot start issue, not cold. Also, what's your car? S4 or S5?

^^+1 also look into cleaning your injectors. Look for KGparts on this forum, he hooks it up.

Here's what you should do in an attempt to remedy your hot start problems:
1) Check your compression. If you get low numbers, you'll need a rebuild sooner rather than later 2) Check and set your TPS to within Factory spec. 3) Finish the other 15,000-45,000 tune up procedures If you still have trouble 4) Send your injectors out to be cleaned (honestly you can do those in any order you want, but sending out your injectors makes it hard to do alot of the other stuff)

mistake #1 taking advice from ppl at Autozone/kragen's or any local auto shop.
Look at the list Vex gave you and start diagnosing http://rotarycarclub.com/showthread.php?t=1790 Check your TPS, your timing, and do a tune up. That shouldn't cost too much. Once everything is within specs you can figure out what needs to be replaced.

It's your car. THey always seem to KNOW something.
Just don't buy anything until you're sure it's broken.

Ask him how many rx-7s he's owned.
If he says 1 or less, don't listen to him at all.
