Default SC vehicle property tax

I moved to SC about a year ago and had to pay a hefty sum of property tax on my 8. Anyways, I just got a bill from the county treasurer (less than a year since I registered my 8, for property tax, again. Do I have to pay property tax on my car every year in SC?

I get paid, which is taxed. When I bought my car it was taxed. And now I have to pay property tax on it too!?!?!? On top of vehicle registration fees.... %#$&!

Yes, every year. It decreases slightly every year. If your 8 is ever in an accident or if your mileage is high, be sure to appeal the assessment.

The new bill is not early. It just gives a long lead time before you have to pony up the dough.

Where did you move from? Many states have yearly property tax. In fact, when I lived in Monkey Co, PA I was told that you are also expected to tally up the value of all your possesions in your house and send the state a cut. Needless to say, many people lived in "an empty house."

AL also has an auto property tax, but it is deductible from your income taxes... if you can remember to bring the receipt with you.

Before I moved to SC I was in Indiana, with no vehicle property tax, and prior to that New Mexico that also had no vehicle property tax.

What do they consider high milage? My 07 8 has nearly 20K miles... does that count?

Call the tax assessors office for a schedule of mileage.

(Generally speaking) the total cost are no different from any other state.

The car taxes for my 2006 X5 are about $750 a year.
The car taxes for my 1995 Rodeo are about $175 a year.
The car taxes for my 1994 7 are about $200 a year.
The car taxes for my 1988 7 are about $50 a year.
The home taxes for my 2000 SF house are $750 a year.

In other states, the car tax might be lower, but as an offset the cost of the home taxes would probably be at least twice as high a SC.

[East] Tennessee rocks. No wheel tax, car property tax, or smog.

most of Ohio has no emission checks. Only time i ever paid tax on a car was when i transfer the title, and its only about 6% of what i bought it for, which is always 100 dollar or so

And our property taxes seem to be city determined here...

$15!?!? Sigh...

I want to move back to New Mexico now... no car tax and and my parents house (~2200 square feet) is about $600 a year in taxes. Low sales and income tax too.
