5th & 6th port repair and clean up
WOW... is all I have to say. I had another thread about only one port being stuck w/ some pics, but I thought I'd do a quickie thread on my progress for repairing the 5/6 ports on my 5 letter.
So I thought I'd get lucky and break the little stuck bastard free without needing to remove the LIM. No such luck. One good thing about owning countless different engines over the years, I have about every gasket you can think of and decided to go ahead and clean everything up, remove the LIM and hog wash the hell out of the intake. Upon removing the LIM I discovered why that port was stuck. SAND. TONS OF SAND. I don't know how the engine didn't suck any of it into the combustion chamber but damn. This was an FL car so I was glad to see no rust, but I knocked about 2" of sand soaked in oil off the LIM and out from around the ports. Apparently the sand particles wedged themselves into the port and froze the sleeve. Oh well. Even though I'm selling this car, I still take some pride in my work, so here's what I'm doing for the prospective new owner: -New LIM gasket -New UIM gaskets (both parts) -All new copper washers on Oil injectors, cleaned oil injectors -New actuator gaskets -New ACV gaskets and cleaning -anti-seeze on the bolts -cleaning intake ports, manifolds, etc -painting parts back to stock aluminum The prev owner must have replaced a lot of the vac hoses when he pulled it off to paint things "blue" so I didn't replace them although I'd like to put silicon hoses on. Oh well. Here are some pics. I should have this wrapped up tomorrow and move on to the replacement oil cooler and lines. After that - she'll be mechanically 100%. I'm hoping to get the idle to rest right at 800-850 instead of the 900 I got it to right now. Old stuff before cleaning, etc: Last edited by WE3RX7; 02-04-2009 at 11:49 PM.. |

More dirty pics... I didn't take a picture of the sand, but I should have. I have a feeling this car went off the road. The passenger fender is mucked up, so was the header panel and rear quarter. I could see spinning out into a ditch in FL would def pour sand everywhere!

And for the clean parts.
I soak everything in Simple Green for as long as I can. I also use paint stripper (this stuff is like acid, DO NOT GET ON HANDS) to help break up carbon deposits. The paint is a ceramic high temp made for dispersing heat. Looks good. I like the factory aluminum appearance... The sleeves were also sanded down with a scuff pad to be sure they were smooth... God there is oil everywhere, you cleaned that up right?
I wonder if maybe some did get inside and accelerate the wear a bit?

I cleaned all the parts of oil/coolant/carbon before coating them.
The block has coolant dripping down it due to that line being undone. After I hook it all back up I'm going to spray it down with some carb clean/degreaser. I felt in as far as I could and using a light w/ mirror to verify the sand situation... it doesn't appear that any made it past the entrance of the sleeves. Now, that doesn't speak for the main ports that have no sleeves, its possible some got sucked through there. The car runs fine though besides the port being stuck, so I'm not too worried. If the car doesnt sell because somebody is worried about the engine, its not the end of the world. I'll store it til next summer and do a rebuild then... |

Finally finished it up. I had to take the LIM off a few times because I kept forgetting little lines, etc. Luckily mazda kept most of the same gaskets, etc on this engine as the later NA 13Bs, so I had more than enough stuff laying around and it made the job nice.
I was running low on time towards the end, so there is still some things I'd like to clean more, but really it doesn't matter if its being sold... I just hate not having something look as good as possible! Anyway... she's done. Tomorrow I will fire it up and see what happens. Last edited by WE3RX7; 02-04-2009 at 11:49 PM.. |
