Oil smoke on startup, lots of oil in exhaust/turbo manifold...
I had some issues with the previous set of turbos on my 93 Base so i removed them and swapped on a new set. when i removed the original pair, i noticed that when looking into the turbo exhaust manifold, the exhaust inlet to the secondary turbo was SOAKED in oil, meanwhile the exhaust inlet to the primary turbo was dry as a bone... You can kind of see it in the picture below:

The car smokes a lot on startup, oil smoke that I had attributed to turbos but now I'm thinking that there may be a problem with the OMP or the Oil Injectors on top of the motor that is causing oil to leak into the engine while it's off. My question is, why would there only be all this oil built up on the secondary exhaust inlet? My theory is that because I haven't really gotten into 4500+ rpm range that the oil building in my engine and getting pushed through the exhaust is burning up in the primary exhaust inlet because it is always open, but the oil is building up in the secondary turbo exhaust inlet because the flapper door is keeping that shut while the secondary turbo is not being used. This would make sense because the past 5 times I turned on the car or so, I just moved it around the driveway and did not even get close to opening up the secondary turbo. My BIGGER question is: Where in the heck is all this oil coming from inside the engine? When I start the car there is a TON of oil smoke, and I know it's not from the turbos, its most definitely coming from inside the block, out the exhaust manifold and into the turbo manifold. Is it my OMP or Oil Injectors, or what I missing? Thanks if you actually read all that! Charlie (I also posted this on the evil forum, but wanted to open it up here as well) |

I had the the same issue, it turned out to be a sticking ABV, the valve opens in two stages...it was sticking and opening late. I figured it was oil goo blown out when the old turbos were going bad. Anyway a new ABV and vac line fixed it.
update ....the new blowoff valve stopped the smoke for awhile or maybe it had nothing to do with it at , the smoke came back and I have since installed a mazda re-manufactured engine. Last edited by rhackney; 11-21-2008 at 08:06 PM. Reason: updated |
