Default vacuum hoses on '76-'78 13-B

The 13-B in my Tr-7 idles much smoother with the vacuum hoses (tubes) that run from the distributor to the carb base DISCONNECTED.
Is it O.K. to run the car this way- does this indicate a problem? If so, can it be corrected? Thanx
