Angry large metal pieces in oil pan?

engine is a 13b S4 that was transfer to a GSLSE. The guy who originally did the swap did it as terrible as you can imagine. So i am hoping the this metal was from the old engine and they didn't clean the pan.

but seriously... how do large pieces of metal get into the oil pan? they are like bent up and broken metal strips, maybe 1mm or 2 wide, and maybe 4mm long and about a dozen of these balled up pieces of metal. I couldn't think of anything that would fail and reach the pan like that.

the s4 engine does turn just fine, apex seals looked good via flashlight.

wtf bbq?

Balled up pieces of "lead" is the bearings.
If the bearings are goners, most likely the e-shaft would try to punch through the front or the rear of the engine.
When it tries to do this, it tends to mangle everything under the front oil cover.
In extreme cases, the stat gears and / or gears on the rotors get stripped and the metal (shards) ends up in the oil pan...amazingly.

Well the front cover is off and it all seems okay. no play in anything. Engine turns just like any other engine i've had...

so.. yea...

should i just assemble and see what happens? dont have many other options in my short time frame before moving. nothing was coming out of the oil the drained back when i rotared the engine. let it flow onto my hands a i felt / examined it. Seemed cleanish enouvh. NOTHING like the pan.

well I have some bad news bears:

I was cleaning the front cover to put back on then right about when i was done, I noticed a semi-circular chunk ground out of the inside.... uh oh. following Ted's comments about bearings and the nature of e-shafts to migrate I walked over to the motor. The front counter weight had a nice polished around on the edge, like it had been hitting something... uh oh.

but she still turned by hand nicely and I couldn't get any play by hand. So i used a small prybar between the counterweight and the front iron. And the whole shebang moved about 3/4"... oh uh... scratch that.... FUCK! at least that explains why the rear main seal was compromised.

So yea. car needs an engine... all because some fuckwad didn't torque the wee bolt holding the oil pickup properly and it basically came loose.
