Default Hello from CA/PA!

hello all, i just came across this forum the other day so i signed up. i'm not new to the rotary scene, some of you might have seen me arround on rx7club.com here and there. i'm on my 3rd rx7 now, first one was an 86 n/a auto with stuck secondary injectors (i didnt know this back then), it got totaled in a parking lot and with the money i got back from that i bought a 91 n/a and i was sold! it had more power then anything that i had driven before and it handled just as good as the most fun car i had driven before that (my dads old miata). i am in the navy and i then got stationed in japan for 3 years and it sat pretty much the whole time, so it needs some work now. while i was over there i got some kei office coilovers and cusco strut bars for it, it handles very well now!

right after i got back from japan a couple weeks before flying out to the uss ronald reagan on deployment i bought a salvaged 93 with a blown engine as a project! before i left i managed to get most of the engine bay torn apart and ready to pull the engine out. the previous owner told me that the engine was rebuilt 6000 miles before he blew it. whoever rebuilt the engine before i got it did a terrible job! lots of loose nuts and bolts, none of the solonoids worked, the rubber gromets on the fuel rail were broken and repaired with rtv, not good! when i got back i got a long block from brian (Japan2LA on rx7club), cleaned everything up, new gaskets, O-rings and seals all arround, tested all solonoids, fresh silicon vacuum hose and zip-ties, and did all of the basic reliability mods, now it runs great! only problem i have with the engine, it over boosts, so i need to port my wastegate (first project when i get back from this deployment). but the suspension was way out of wack. i've worked most of the suspension issues out by now, the steering wheel still shakes, but i'm pretty sure that it is the slight bend in one of my front wheels. waiting for it at home i have an M2 copy air box, pettit cool charge 3 innercoler, power FC, knight sports EBS III boost controler, ohlins I.T.O. coilovers, 3 point strut bar, another set of wheels and some other parts that i'm forgetting. its been a big project, but its getting there!

i dont have any pics of my first rx7, but here are a few pics of my 91 and 93 for you guys! sorry, i dont have any pics of the engine bay on this computer right now and usb is disabled, but it looks pretty stock right now.

-kyle

more pics of the FD! the aftermarket airbox was only in for a short bit, i had to do CA smog and nobody would touch my car with an aftermarket non carb legal box. ended up not passing anyways... i think i might have a bad main cat.

Welcome to the club!

I had fits getting my '86 to pass emissions too, so I can feel your pain a little.

It might be a bad cat, it might not, but chances are a new cat will get it to pass (even if that isn't the problem).

Could you license it in PA instead (or are you in an emissions county)?

thanks guys!

yea, emissions can be a pain, my FC passes with flying colors (except one time, but it was just a stuck solonoid valve). i will be getting the FD registered and all in PA in about 10 months or so when i change duty stations from San Diego, but right now it is registered and smoged in CA... but everything else in the emmissions system seems to be working, airpump moos and all solonoids tested good. i do have a downpipe, but i know people have passed without the pre-cats. maybe i just need to tell the smog guy to keep it out of boost, i know that they boosted when they tested it.
