pretty sure owning an FD is like dating a stripper. Everyone looks, at lot are envious, its great when things are going well. But to keep her looking good and happy can cost a fortune and drive a man insane. But when things are good.....

True, except that FDs don't give you herpes.

I'm in the same boat as this guy, I have done a decent amount of homework on rotaries and am planning on getting a rolling shell soon. So most of you are basically recommending reliability first, ponies later. So would it be good judgment, that after I get the car put together I would send it somewhere to get milled out for 3mm seals? Also, an uncle leased an Rx8 once and said it had huge engine flooding problem... will that happen often with all rotaries, or was he doing something wrong. Much thanks, sorry for the long post.

There are huge arguements over 2mm vs. 3mm seals and dino vs. synthetic and other changes.
IMO--Starting out--If you have a realiable rotary mechanic / tuner near by - do what he recommends. If something breaks or doesn't go as expected you are more likely to get help if that person agress with your mods. I am not just talking about getting a refund or such, but trouble shooting pesky problems. I think you will run into problems if the local shop (who again has a good rep) thinks that such and such a mod was done at the wrong time or done improperly - even if others said it was okay. Again this is IMO-from seaching the boards for many years. I have no experiance with RX8's. A friend of mine's cousin traded his back in when the warrany expired because his flooded at lot and he lives far away from a Mazda dealership. I personally have not had any flooded experiance with my FD. I am not a fan of my reman in my car--look for a realiable rebuild if possible over a reman. Herpes - may be more fun than being soaked in car fluids and not getting the job done.

Flooding
I have owned my RX7 for 17 years. The last 3 it has been off the road. I took it off the road at a little over 83K on the original motor. It needed to be painted and a coolant seal let go. The car has never left me stranded and never flooded. Mine was stock all this time so I think that may have something to do with it. Mine is in the process of being completely redone. I look forward to it being on the road in 2010. Great cars. Yes they require more maintanance but in my opinion they are worth it. I have no experience with the RX8 but know many people who had flooding issues with the 04 annd 05's. Mazda has since fixed those issues and any new RX8 should be very reliable and function well.
