Severe cooling issues
Ok, let me give you the quick run down...or at least as quick as I can make it.
So I had pulled the motor over the winter to fix a pan leak. No other changes to the setup other than wrapping exhaust components, etc and re-added the ISC. Put everything back in, refilled the coolant with some distilled water, burped it a few times from the lower rad. hose and fired it up. Naturally more needed to be added, which I did as needed. While I was working on resetting the idle I looked at the temp gauge and WTF!? it's at almost 260! No, no coolant buzzer. Yes it worked as it went off a couple times while filling. So the top rad. hose was hot, the lower cold. I mean as if no coolant was flowing through the radiator at all kind of cold. I'm going to be pulling the rad this weekend and try to get some coolant to flow through the motor. I'm 99.999% sure it's not the pump as revving adjusted the water level as I would expect it would as the pump spins up/down, etc. So, any initial thoughs on what it could be? I blew out the radiator before hand....and now I'm thinking something I don't want to think about....... I hope to hell that some f'n mouse didn't crawl up there over the winter. ![]()

What was it? Hopefully you didnt lose your engine. Had a customer lose and engine last week due to a fauly fan.

No...motor's fine. i'm just a complete and utter idiot. It's the kinda thing that happens when you get a little hasty buttoning things up and are trying to rush to meet deadlines.
I wasn't thinking and didn't burp NEARLY enough. So yeah, she was dry. So I'm sure I'll get my ass kicked by the locals here. ![]()

I did the same thing when I switched to a different turbo setup and decided to put samco coolant hoses on. I was so excited to get the car running that I didn't let the car enough time to go through its normal burping procedures. I also forgot to turn the fn heater on in the car

BTW for burping when I got my engine installed I had a small oil leak that only leaked with the engine running so I jacked up the front of the car and let it run while I looked for that. I proceeded to burp the system as I looked for the oil leak, and I never had to burp it again after that one time.
So if you are refilling your coolant and don't want to burp the system 100 times, jacking up the front of the car and letting it run while you burp might solve that. I was amazed as I'm use to it taking 4-5 heat cycles.

The fill rate should be 1 gallon every ten minutes, which equals a very slow pour, but if you fill at that rate you will not have any air pockets in the system.

A coolent fill tip I haven't seen anyone mention. Leave the hose off the wax pellet. Fill until water flows out. You should only need to add a pint or two after that. Another trick, jack the nose in the air as high as you can. Getting the top of the radiator higher than the wax pellet really helps. Usually only need 1 or two heat cylces.
And of course don't start the car until you know you have nearly two gallons in it. Don't feel bad many have been caught by that. Last edited by rx4ur7; 04-10-2009 at 01:23 AM. |

haha... it happens to everyone in some form or another. One time I was putting an FD back together and forgot to put the started back on. Needless to say, it wouldn't crank. doh!
