November 2008 Ride of the Month - afgmoto1978 (Winner of FD/RX-8 Month)!
Year, model, mods, etc 1993 RX-7 HUGE list of mods (I'll put them up later today, they're on my other computer. Questions to the owner: Q: Congratulations for winning Ride of the Month! Tell us about how you acquired this car? A: Thanks!! Lol, well I acquired it when I was in college, but not by conventional means. I have a bit of a lead foot (still do) and the law caught up to me while I was in school. I lost my license as a direct result. While this was happening I was looking for an FD. Found one, but couldn't insure it even if I wanted too or drive for that matter. So I made a deal with my dad, he would buy it with the money I had and insure it for a few years while my driving record improved and rates reduced to a manageable level. So for the last five years before the restoration we shared the car, raced it and as a result became closer. Q: How did you first become interested in modified cars? Have you had any previously? A: I was always interested in cars as a kid, but it didn't turn into an obsession until college. My first fabrication/modification project was building a Formula SAE race car. Since that first car I've built, modified, developed and repaired a few dozen open and close wheel race cars, both club and professional level. Q: Whats the biggest reason you chose a rotary powered car to modify? A: The lines and handling of the FD are what sold me, the rotary was what was in it. That and I've enjoyed the challenge of building a high horsepower turbo rotary. I could have easily put a crazy LS7 drive train package in this car (especially for the money I've put into the last three motors), but that wasn't in this car's future. Maybe the next FD I will go another route either three rotor or LS. Q: Is this car your daily driver? Do you participate in any form of racing? (Drag, Auto-X, etc) A: I don't intend to daily drive it, but I could. I participate in Auto-X, Hillclimb, Time Attack, and HPDE. Amazingly I have yet to drag this car, next year maybe. Q: What do you enjoy most about your car? A: How timeless the body lines are. Q: Do you have any future plans for the car, or any car? A: Lots of Time Attacks and Hill Climbs. Beyond that maybe an uprated transmission, differential, ITB UIM, Quad Adjustable Coilovers, custom steering column pod with a molded in power commander and a competition steering wheel. Q: Any other hobbies besides cars? A: Motorcycles, snowmobiles, skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, and sky diving. Q: Anyone you'd like to thank? A: Apex Restoration for letting me use their shop to build my car. Without them this project probably wouldn't of happened. Freightliner for being my silent sponsor and employer, if it wasn't for their machine shop I couldn't have fabricated all the things on my car as easily and cheaply. People I would like to thank are John Cartapex, Bobby, Marc The Spyder, and all the people wishing me luck. Vendors I'd like to thank are Synapse Engineering, Pineapple Racing, Speed Concepts, A-Spec Tuning, Baxter's in Beaverton, GP Moto, Oil Filter Supplies, Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies, Custom Car Craft, and Industrial Paint and Supplies. I know I'm forgetting some others... Additional pictures:
