Fins on reman Water pump are different.
Ok, so I bought a remaned water pump, and when I got it, I noticed that the fins on it are way different then on my old one. now, they are bigger so maybe they can move more water, but I just dont know. also, I hope it's just because the pump has all new seals and bearings in it, but it's a little stiff whne you spin it, while the old one is loose, and feels close to what a turbo would when you spin the shaft. I just wanted to check what's up with it?
Here are some pics: ![]() ![]() ![]()

The impeller on the old one is corroded, the new one is how a water pump should look.
You want it to be tight and not spin freely, that means the seals are working, and it will loosen up from use. Enjoy.

Wait, DJ, would you care to take a second look at the fins on the old one? They seem to be WAY smaller on the new one! It corroded THAT much? Plus, it's rusty, but the fins seem like they didnt get THAt much damage on them... hmm. Is it possible that I got an FD water pump? It fits, so it doesnt matter, but I heard that their design was a little different on the fins themselves.
As far as the spinning thing, great, I hoped that it should be like that! ![]()

They probably were not as thick as the reman, but they surely were thicker than they are now. Lol.
Also, remember, technology has advanced since the FC water pump was originally designed. The new one seems much better. I have a question: Why did you buy a reman, new ones are not too expensive. My company doesn't even sell reman WP's anymore.

Nope thats not an FD waterpump...........its not a stamped steel piece of junk.
This is an aftermarket pump yes? The impellar is probably produced by the company, and that design is probably a *fits 486 different types of car* style. As in, it works as well the original and as well as it needs to, and we can get away without having to make new tooling for each of these pumps so we can sell them for reasonable prices. Should work fine, perhaps better the original given the bullet center on the larger one should give better pump to housing clearance. The tightness as addressed is normal. |

Umm, because I'm a cheap ass and this one was $48 + shipping. It seems just as good as a new one, and a new one around me is $110.

Alright, I'll let it slide for this instance. But next time don't skimp on one of THE most important components of a cooling system!!

This is what you get when you buy "generic" aftermarket water pumps.
These reman shops use mix-n-match parts, so they try and keep their inventories as simple as possible. Just throw it on... If it doesn't work, go bitch at the place that sold you that piece of crap. If it works, don't sweat the differences. Easy. ![]() -Ted |
