This pic was I think -1.5", which is where the car was most of the time:

Sorry for the crappy pic. I can't for the life of me find a decent one showing the stance.

Just all depends on what your wanting out of the car.
I know exactly what you mean, which is why I'm more interested in backspace than offset at this time, I want to stay clear of the springs/coilovers without the use of spacers, the fender doesn't worry me much because that can always be modified.
My Rx8 comes with 8" wide wheels and with proper backspace and offset I've come to find out you can stuff 11s all around by just rolling the lip of the fenders.

looks like a kamei but i dont think it is, as for the rx8 my friend has the blue one with the blue lip and i think hers are 10 1/2 wide on the rear no rolling or cutting.

if your not worried about the fender then just do a low offset and youll be fine might have to do flares but i think they look damn good on em anyways

To be honest I'm not sure anymore. I've been told it was a dealer-option on 79's as part of an IMSA appearance package. I've also been told it was a offered by some long defunct aftermarket manufacturer. I first saw one in '02 at a Mazda meet and fell in love. Ran across a guy at Rotary Revolution '05 who had converted to a widebody kit who sold me the lip for $30 cash. I converted from -SE bumpers to SA just to use it. One of these days mine will look this good.
