As far as I know, the factory amp has to be bypassed. The best way to do it, is run new wires to the speakers. Especially since you're likely going to replace the stock speakers anyhow.... I believe the stock speakers use a plugin that is not compatible with aftermarket replacements.
Crutchfield offers (last I knew) a dash kit for the 84/85 models, but you're on your own for 79-83. I have no clue if they offer any kind of wiring kit to use the stock wiring. I actually found the radio plug adapter for my old nissan truck hanging on a peg at an autozone, but I had to hunt for the 2 into 1 coaxial plug......
