Hello
Hello.
A little history of me and RX7. I have owner an FB and an FC both of which i dropped 302s into. I just acquired a free FB with a blown 12a and plan to keep it rotary. While searching for some info I stumbled across this site and you all seem to be pretty knowledgeable, and more good natured than other sites I have seen. I rally signed up to ask a simple question then create a build thread when i get started,. My simple question is this(I can ask it in the engine tech section if it would be better): Is there any way to tell what kind of port an engine has without taking it apart? I was talking to a friend of mine who parts out cars and he has what was described to him as a "ported" 12a, but does not have any more info than that from the original owner. He is giving me a good deal on it due to the risk of a crappy porting job or other issues. As long as this thing seems sound from an initial inspection and compression test I plan to pick it up, but it would be nice to know what kind of port i am tuning my carb for. |

The only way to tell would be the "brap brap brap" idle sound that a bridgeport makes, or a P-port is pretty obvious. It uses a custom intake and such.
I may be wrong. I'm a noob on custom ports haha. Welcome though, we are pretty friendly and smart here. |

I know my types of ports, but I cant size my carb without knowing for sure. I mean I would not throw a 650 on a light street port, but I would on a bridge. Its times like this I wish I had a scope still. |

Pretty hard to tell without the engine running in a car. Even with a light port, you most likely wouldn't be able to tell.
Go ahead and crack it open, get a soft seal kit. If it isn't ported, now's the time!

Atkins Rotary, Rotary Aviation, Mazdatrix might sell the 12A kits.

I am about to place a big order at Atkins. They rock. You are essentially getting Mazda OE, or better from them for much cheaper than the dealer. Mazdatrix is pretty good too, but check around, some of their stuff is pricey. You can actually get a soft seal kit from Fel-Pro for 12A's still. Just, for the love of God, don't use the oil control rings they come with. They are garbage. 12A's are simple, and when you put it back together, you can ditch all the emissions crap and have a very basic, uncluttered, super reliable engine.

Yeah, I am watching videos and googling the process to pull the cover and it does not look to hard. I was worried I was getting in over my head leaving my V8s and 4cyl turbo cars.....
Thanks for the start guys. I will defiantly get a build thread going once I get the engine next week. Compression test was good on the new engine, so I figure any extra parts I would need I can pull out of the one that's in the car(1 bad apex seal, one bad corner seal). |

Rotaries are pretty easy to rebuild. It really is about measuring, measuring, measuring clearances. Making sure that everything is clean and use as many new seals as possible.
Good luck man. We are all here to help.

Yeah. a full rebuild kit from Mazdatrix = outrageous. Atkins is a good place to go for decent prices.

I'd suggest replacing everything you can. But thats just me. I'd leave as little window for error as possible.

Just take it apart, and measure the specs to see what you can reuse, and what should be replaced. You can post pictures here and get others opinions as well. Good luck!
