They are not "new" engines.
It sounds like you're looking at imported J-spec, used engines. Like with anything used, you take your chances. -Ted |

^^^ What RETed said. You're going to end up having to rebuild 99% of the time. If you want a new or already rebuilt core, it's going to cost a lot more than $1,000.00

Needing a new tow rig.

i cant remember who it was but they went to tigerjapanese that they went to to get a motor and had the ability to do a comp test and out of something like 15 engines 12 were blown.... low mileage dosnt mean jack.
IMHO DO NOT DO THIS get a rebuilt motor from a reputable vendor on the site it WILL SAVE YOU MONEY in the long run. a buddy of mine did this used j-spec once paid shipping through them and all got the motor shipper needed shipping cost... and then the motor was trashed on top of that so he eneded up with a blown motor and then paid double shipping....... but hey go ahead everybody likes the lottery take a gamble you could be the million dollar winner z |

JDM are not new motors. This is really one of my peaves, people come in with blown motors and they say that they just installed a new motor. This relates to MANA rebuilds or JDM's. The problem with jdm motors is that they are sitting for who knows how long when pulled then they can sit in a container on a ship for 6 months. The worst thing for a used round motor. Just about every one that I have taken apart has been pretty beat up internally. I will only warranty labor on my motors.
As you said though, a 35k core is better than the 210K, that motor is a good mud anchor. Will not be much of anything in it that will be useable. That is if you are one of the lucky ones as proz07 states. Last edited by rx4ur7; 10-09-2009 at 01:25 AM.. |

rebuild your motor. Send it to RotaryResurrection or buy one of his GOOD motors to drop in.
If you're GONNA buy a used motor get it off a car that RAN not a motor that set for who knows how long

Some of these cars were wrecked due to accidents. Some of these cars blew their engines - that's why they were junked! ...then... These motors sit around, sometimes outside in the rain, before they get shipped over to the USA. ...then... These motors sit around, sometimes outside in the rain, before they get sold to some schmuck like you. You take your chances. "Low mileage" don't mean jack when rainwater gets inside the engine. Yes, that's right - some of these engines sit outside in puddles of water. Don't be fooled by the super clean look just by eyeballing the engine on the pallet - these engines have been pressure washed and sprayed with clear coat (paint) to make them look really pretty. -Ted |

What part of the country are you in? I build those things also. But with over 200k like I said you will be lucky to get an eccentric shaft out of it. Especially turbo motors. Out here they are near replacement spec at 120K. That is why I recommend new housings after 100. I do not think it is worth all the time and $$$ for something that is going to start loosing power driving out the door. Unless you just want to get it running to sell. There are a few places you can buy 1200 rebuilds but that is what they are. If you have priced the parts you know that nothing much has been replaced. Anyone can throw one of these together and make it run, for a short time. Any reputable builder is going to be up there in price. I think just about everyone on any forum will tell you, "you get what you pay for."
Apex seal lands are probably spladed and out of specifications. Rotors will not be usable unless you spend the bucks to have them oversized to 3mm. Count on all 5 housings. All seals, two rotors or modification. (At least you should be able to find a couple of decent used rotors), oil pump, chain. Front cover, oil pan, flywheel, front shaft bits and hardware will be the only things that will be salvaged. If you want something to last and be reliable, bite the bullet call Ray and get all new housings and seals from Malloy. That is how I am doing new builds now. Because the markup is not really great I give the client a list and have them buy all the big ticket items if not all the parts. That way I do not have to deal with the paper work, charge and then pay sales tax. Makes it easier to go for some port and intake modifications also. Last edited by rx4ur7; 01-01-2010 at 07:42 PM.. |
