With $8k you should be able to get a pretty nice first gen. I'd get a GSLSE if I were you. But first gen guys can give you a better idea than I can.
Here are the manuals, you can start learning now. http://foxed.ca/index.php?page=rx7manual |

Not sure about PR, but here in the states you can get a very nice SA for 5 or 6K or go for
a GSL-SE for about the same price. If you lower your expectations you can get a nice 1st gen for 3K easily anytime. So what series first gen interests you? Do you want to buy it here and ship to PR? Is that 8K just for the car or for buying/shipping/fixing it? Makes a big difference how you look at it.

Good choice, the 12A is bullet proof for the most part. If you want to keep it simple I would
go with 12A FBs, not SAs. With an SA (79-80) you will have a lot of unobtanium parts that will need serviced or replaced. The best FB in my opinion is the 82-3 12A FB, lightest flywheel and rotating mass (82) and also the lightest chassis of all the 1st gens I think. The 83 divide in the year and have drive shaft differences but can come with a factory LSD as well. Personally I like SA, because they were the first iteration. I think your funding sounds ok to get a nice running example and then make it road worthy.

Oh, welcome to the forum and thank you for your service!
PS, I love PR. . specifically Culebra. My favorite place to go and where I'd love to retire one day

If you want it to be a daily or at least close to it, I'd stay away from too aggressive of a port. . Ted (t_g_farrell) has done great work with his ignition set-up, I would recommend a direct fire mod like his. I believe he has a write-up on it.

So I would recommend first getting it running as stock which means replacing all the rubber stuff from bushings to hoses on the entire car. Then I would think about improvements from there. 1. Exhaust - RB SP is the best and best value over the long term and is a well tuned setup for later performance mods. 2. Ignition - do a DFIS (dual fire ignition system) which gives you a wasted spark ignition which is much better than the stock ignition. Many writeups here and on other forums. 3. Modify the Nikki for better flow and performance. I have a write up linked in my sig but there are others as well. 4. Electric fan 5. Suspension, wheel and tire upgrades. You do all of these and you will have a very nice performing street car with very good DD characteristics. Have fun and keep us posted on what you end up doing.
