New Coil Relocation Bracket - Feeler

4 Attachment(s)
Here is a new Coil Relocation Bracket made.
Let me know what you think......

Garfinkles Motor Works 01-06-2009 11:11 PM

The bracket mounts the two stock trailing coils and the sec gen leading coil in a clear space below the steering shaft .The plug wires will be short and the coils are out of the heat .There should not be any trouble with water being a problem if all the connections are sealed .I have had my coils mounted low for many years and no shorting in the rain. (Thanks Chad for the pictures)

Herblenny 01-06-2009 11:17 PM

Can't wait to get this!!

This is what I needed!!

fire85gslse 01-06-2009 11:27 PM

Great solid mount, no chance to heat soak, allows you to keep your cruise control and like David said he has been running his coils in that spot for awhile now with no problems. A Win Win for everyone...........

jecr 01-06-2009 11:43 PM

price?

Herblenny 01-07-2009 07:52 AM

Another BIG PLUS is shorter wires!! I didn't like the other set up as wires were twice as long. This set up makes the wires shorter than stock :)

Garfinkles Motor Works 01-07-2009 11:06 AM

I will give a price after I check material cost and the time to copy a master pattern .The first ones are made with alum plate ,I may do the rest with steel plate that will cost less . I will supply the bolts and spacers for the coils .I will modify the wiring if needed .

Brent 01-07-2009 08:36 PM

David, Do you have to drill the holes to mount this?

AHarada 01-07-2009 09:15 PM

Very nice work once again David.

Few questions:

1) Do the coil wires need to be extended or modified?

2) Could a stock 3rd gen leading coil be bolted up just as easily?

3) Would stock 3rd gen or any other off the shelf plug wires be appropriate?

fire85gslse 01-07-2009 09:47 PM

I will try to answer this, but let David tell you for sure.

Brent, we did drill holes and placed a threaded insert in to allow us to be able to remove it as needed.

AHarada, the coil wires would be best if custom fitted to the exact length to have less wire needed.
I don't think the stock 3rd gen coil would bolt in the same holes but you could re drill it if you wanted, but why when the TII coil is alot better and cheap to pick up.
A set of wires where you can trim them to the popper lengths needed would be petter as not to have alot of extra wire.

Hope that helps.

Garfinkles Motor Works 01-08-2009 11:34 AM

I can make the plate to use all stock coils but the sec gen coil is an upgrade and cost way less to replace .

charlies7 01-12-2009 07:54 PM

Actually the wires I use have a resistivity of 40-50 ohms per foot. Wires that are measuring in 2.5 feet have a resistance of 100-125 ohms. Last time I checked that was LESS than stock..

But who looks into that stuff anyways...:001_005:

Nice method David, good to see another approach.

Garfinkles Motor Works 01-13-2009 10:34 AM

The wires I make from the roll are MSD 8mm with 40 ohms per foot .

I'll be getting a set for 3rd gen coils. I'll post up when I get it.

My logic behind using 3rd gen coils are, I already have 10+ of these with no issues for my power range. Why spend more money if I don't have to??

Garfinkles Motor Works 01-14-2009 09:04 PM

The master plate is made for the plate using the 2nd gen leading coil and the drilling jig is made .The master plate is made for the plate with all stock coils but the drilling jig is NOT made as of today . I will make the jig as soon as I can get the time .The plate with the sec gen coil has 10 theaded holes and four spacers ,the stock coil plate has 9 threaded holes and no spacers .Both plates have matching mounting holes ( 4) so the plates will interchange if needed . The plate for the sec gen coil is a small bit longer .If I made one plate that mounted both types of coils then there will need to be 13 threaded holes ,that will drive the cost up so that will not be considered . Plus the spacers .

Garfinkles Motor Works 01-14-2009 09:09 PM

HERBLENNY has 5 to 10 of everything .And he knows everyone . How good is that !

AHarada 01-15-2009 01:04 AM

David,

What is the pricing on these? And when will they be available for purchase?

Garfinkles Motor Works 01-15-2009 05:25 AM

I will put a price on them after I make a few more and see how long it takes a materal cost and bolt cost .I have bought the taps and drills . I will try to do some this week end .

Garfinkles Motor Works 01-23-2009 09:10 PM

I am going to make some for stock coils in the next few days then I will do some for the sec gen lead coil .I will supply SS bolts for the coils and I found a threaded insert to mount the plate to the car that is easy to use .The polly nuts I was using seem to be hard for some people to install .The price will be under $ 30 if I can get a good deal on the SS bolts and lock washers and inserts .I have the plates cut and the drill pattern made, and I bought the drills and taps yesterday .

AHarada 01-23-2009 11:25 PM

Please put me in line for one with a stock 3rd gen coil. I'd like to get one as soon as they're ready.

Man, that is a good deal. Easy way to relocate your coils, cheap and all the thought/labor has been done.

Garfinkles Motor Works 01-27-2009 12:17 PM

The SS bolts for the sec gen coils will be here Wensday and the mounting threaded inserts will be here today .They will be ready to ship or pick up after Wensday .

Garfinkles Motor Works 01-27-2009 12:26 PM

Pricing the all stock coil mount with SS coil bolts and mounting inserts, countersink allen mounting bolts, black oxide ,will be $30 plus shipping ,estimated . The plate for sec gen leading and stock trailing with SS coil mounting bolts and threaded mounting inserts and black oxide countersink allens will be$ 35 plus shipping . The two plates are mounted with the same pattern holes so you can unbolt and upgrade to sec gen coil with ease . The plates are 3/8 thick steel so the threads are strong and will last better than an alum plate .

Sorry but I have to ask, does anything have to be deleted for this to work?

I'm still learning.

This basically takes your coils (stock mounted on top of your motor under you intake) and moves them to the frame rail.

Prometheus 01-30-2009 03:09 PM

thanks for the reply, I know this relocates the coils.

The question was if anything is to be deleted (original equipment) for this to be installed.

Some relocation brackets take the place of the power steering/ ABS unit.

Wondering if this was along those same lines.

I'd like to keep all accessories.

Thanks!

~Jesse

Garfinkles Motor Works 01-30-2009 10:44 PM

The plate is designed to bolt on the frame under the steering shaft with the coils facing upward as in Chads picts . There is nothing to move or delete .Your spark plug wires will need to be short .I make my wires using MSD wire and ends .I DO reuse the large Mazda boots . The MSD wire is 40 ohms per foot .

hsitko 02-01-2009 01:12 AM

I'm interested in one of these. How much do the second gen leading coils go for? How much better are they? Will i need to re-tune at all? I have a twin power and stock coils on my fd. Thanks!

Garfinkles Motor Works 02-01-2009 09:25 AM

I think a used 2nd gen coil is about $ 50 ,call the Junk yards and sellers on the forum ,Do noy pay for the Ing box the coil is bolted to , not needed for you .The coil is bigger and will last longer plus puts out more power . The coil for the na motor and the turbo motor is the same . The stock coil wire connector will be cut off your harness and two ring connectors put on .very simple .I will write install instructions soon and Phil may put up picts .

That was the exact reason this one was designed, so people like myself can keep the cruise even those that coil relocation piece is a work of art and looks awesome in the car.
You could upgrade to a FC coil found between 20-80 dollars

Garfinkles Motor Works 02-01-2009 02:55 PM

Up grade to FC coil for 20 to 80 dollars .

AHarada 02-24-2009 08:34 PM

Recieved my bracket today. Details can be found here:

Herblenny 02-24-2009 10:44 PM

I got this unit but haven't had time to install as I can't move my other car :)

But all that would be resolved after I go visit Garfinkle this friday! I'll post some pics.

jkstill 02-25-2009 01:26 PM

Too bad I already installed my Charlies7 bracket...

AHarada 02-25-2009 06:42 PM

So did I. I'm switching from Charles7's bracket to this one for a few reasons. The plug wires would pretty much be as short as they possibly could be, it opens up space in the corner of the engine bay, and it just looks less cluttered being out of sight.

Another thing is that this piece is much beefier and much higher quality IMO, and still costs a lot less. I'm not talking down Charlies7's bracket, I had no problems with it, I just prefer this one.

Same here.

I did consider Charlie7's. But did not like the idea of much longer wires. This was my personal decision about the longer wire issues and not the quality of is unit.

I would also say this about Garfinkle's bracket.. It might be bit tougher for someone with engine already in the engine bay as you would have to drill some holes. It would make it a much easier install for those who already have their engine out of the car.. Which will be my case..

I would agree phil, but with a angle drill you could probably do this from under the car easy.
And your items over here are looking good!!!!! Might want mine to look the same :)
David, does awesome work!
I wish I had the time to get my car done. Working monday thru friday sucks! Wish i was back on shift work.
