hey folks
i have a 91 n/a fc
the night i picked up my brother the car ran fine.. the next day i went to start the car it would only crank. i thought i was flooded so i tried to de-flood it and it didn't work. i tried pulling the egi fuse and cranking it. And i pulled the plugs and they were bad they did kinda smell gas. so i put another spare new set i have. I tried starter fuild but it didn't work.
still nothing what could it be ?
My oil is has bout over 850 miles
the plugs are new.
the wires are okie all plugged in
i have 12 volts on the gauge on the cluster

Are you sure you plugged all the wires back up correctly? The coil packs have numbers, like L1, L2, and T1, T2.
I woudl take off all the wires, and re run them one buy one. L1 goes to the bottom, T1 goes to the top, same for the second rotor.
Also, when you crank it, does it crank slow or fast? You want to make sure your battery has enough voltage.

How's the starter?
your fuel pump getting juice?

Lol, he did say it cranks, so I would assume that the starter is ok?

he did but it never turned over....
he needs to post a video....
Also, I like to throw this one in a lot....Check your main relay.

LOL all my fuses are good on the main fuse box in the engine bay.
the engine cranks fast and loud according to what Junpower heard on my celphone.. its odd..
im have to check tomorrow for
Air
fuel
spark

Good idea, also check compression.

i checked the compression the poor mans way. it made 6 even chu chu sounds..( sounded like a chu chu train to me haha :) ) i know my motors good... im begining to think it maybe my starter. i checked a few forums about ' just cranking' ' no starting' a few were about the starter.. im pull it and get it tested and see what happens.
I do have fuel
and air.
i haven't checked for spark yet.. whats a easy way to do it?
i do recall at times a few times in the pass couple of months the car would crank a few times before it would start.. and the car did turn off on my twice when i was driving 2 different times when it was cold.. I believe that would be related to the spark plugs.

take channel locks with a rubber handle and wrapped in a t-shirt (or else shock) and hold each wire with the spark plug attached close to the fender while someone turns the key/tries to start the car
Best done at night or at dusk

take one of the ignition wires out and point it the nut or studs on the strut tower. crank away.
its easier if u can have someone help you.
where did u check if u have fuel? is ur afm hooked up?

i checked for fuel in the rear at the gas tank in the top of the sender unit. i had fuel in both the going to the engine line and coming back from the engine line.. i think it would be good to check at the block just above the filter. but i believe there is fuel in the lines.
my afm is plugged in.

let us know when u check for spark

Here is something I would try..
Remove the line coming out of the filter..
get a chunk of hose, put it on the filter, and put it in a bucket.
crank for 5 seconds and see if there is any fuel in the bucket.. (you may have to do this a couple times)
if no fuel the filter may be plugged, if not alot of fuel could be a weak pump or clogging filter.
then I would check for spark.. check on both the leading and trailing coils

quick side note if you take the starter off and take it to Advance, Auto Zone, O'Reilly's they test it for free

Long story short, if the starter will turn the engine at a reasonable speed, it is not the starter. Just the same, you might want to pull start the car to see if higher cranking speed is all the engine needs to run.

my guess is if it is cracnking like normal u can stop thinking it is battery, starter, alternator..
it has to be either a flooding issue, fuel or spark.
unless you have cats that are completely plugged.. I have seen piston engines not start due to a plugged cat and once removed it fires right up.
start with the basics..
make sure u have fuel BEFORE and AFTER the filter
make sure u have fuel BEFORE and after the rail (check the return hose)
then make sure you have spark coming out the wires.
make sure u have no large vac leaks
make sure your sensors are ALL plugged in.(especially AFM)
once u do all of this then give us an update.

yeah im begining to think that too spooledupRacing
im begining to think that the plugs i put in are fouled now and same with the oil.. the oil is now smelling like gas.. i've done the Complex Unflooding Procedure(1986 - 91) from
http://rx7.com/techarticles_unfloodFC.html and it smells like gas and oil when i crank it. more like gas now. thats when the plugs aren't in.
so i put in another set of new plugs and i can feel that it cranks alot smoother and faster. i've tried starter fuild the car starts up only momentary.
this is what im begining to think what happened.. the car ran normal until the plugs became worn out and fouled.. and that so happens, after i get home..
so the next morning or when ever i try to start. bad plugs wont create spark and car floods itself due to excessive cranking. excessive cranking leads to oil and gas mixing and showing no compression sym'tems. not knowing the plugs are bad. im have to change my plugs every 6k or 8k miles.
so whats a good way to get all that fouled up oil out ? im running 10-40w conventional oil gtx castrol.
p.s. my cats new got about 4 months ago.

well even with fouled gas the car will run, I wouldnt worry about changing the oil until after u get it running again..
If you would like I can call u this evening and maybe talk u through a few procedurs to try and emilinate something.
let me know.

Change your oil, and pull start the car.

mmm im also thinking that my fuel pump strainer is clogged since gas was so high and i was so cheap... the strain has more than a few pieces of junk around it . so im going to replace it.

okie i just had my starter checked its good i cleaned up the contacts on the starter too.
Rotary#10
11-11-2008, 07:17 PM
had my battery changed too. turn over really quick but doesn't turn on.. now when it cranks it really sounds like its flooded. i got fuel at the fuel pump lines just right out of the tank and i got fuel after the filter in the lines..

I voted defoul or replace plugs and pull start with fresh oil still.

mm there i tried the unflooding and when i checked the rag i used to cover the spark plug holes there were these little pieces of black carbon? gunk? ash ? on the rag. that shot out from Leading spark plug holes. any idea what it is ?
Phoenix7
11-12-2008, 12:22 AM
no....but have you done a real compression test yet? How bout the new plugs?
Rotary#10
11-12-2008, 12:35 AM
i have new plugs. do the poor mans compression test ? how ? i stand corrected as a noobie.
im going into the FSM and checking out the 'main relay' i thought u meant main fuse, i got them mixed with the main relay.

Could be carbon, could be apex seal.
Rotary#10
11-12-2008, 06:12 PM
nah couldn't be apex seal. it could just be carbon build up.. whats a for sure way to know that the car will run after i change the oil..
i was thinking
-change the oil
-spray starter fuild in the intake after afm
- put about an ounce of marvel mysetery oil in the leading spark plug holes. it should start huh...
Phoenix7
11-12-2008, 06:14 PM
the main relay is at the firewall....in the corner between firewall and fender on the Driver's side.
It still won't start with the new spark plugs?
TehMonkay
11-12-2008, 06:59 PM
Pull starting it would make it for sure start as long as ignition and fuel are good.

i changed the oil today and i got nothing.
here is a small video i recorded..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfpfNar9aPc
its kinda dark but you can hear the engine cranking. and the rpm gauge bounce up a bit.
i only cranked it 3 times. i didn't want the oil to be fouled up again.

did you already check your coils??
Rotary#10

Update:
i was checking for fuel and i have little fuel past the fuel filter.. isn't the fuel supposed to be shooting out of the lines?
what i did was I disconnected the fuel line from the filter then cranked the car and the fuel went into a old soda bottle. Very little came out. So is my fuel pump crapping out on me? or is the filter clogged?
I know its supposed to have alot of pressure pushing the fuel..
anyone have any other explanations of the fuel shooting out only little amounts ?
im check my coils with the oms meter i have
Phoenix7
11-18-2008, 09:14 PM
what's the voltage going to the pump?
It should be no less than 12V IIRC.
Rotary#10
11-18-2008, 11:01 PM
what IIRC mean ?

If I Recall Correctly. I'd have to look at the FSM... I'm having a hard time finding it but check out the FSM sticky's last post about rewiring the fuel pump. Make sure ou have the correct voltage going to the pump.
If the voltage is fine then the pump is dead? Voltage....
Phoenix7
11-18-2008, 11:45 PM
I checked out the FSM for a bit and I didn't find the voltage but I did find other things to look into. Look at page F1-58.

okie i checked with my ohms meter there with FSM specs
main relay fuse good
afm good
intake air thermosensor good
lets see i took out the fuel filter and checked out the lines. clean nothing but fuel and in the filter .. mm i got curious so i dried the IN end of the filter and put my lips to it blew into the filter and fuel shot out, clean and clear. i continued this until i felt the air i was pushing thru it flowed freely.. i replaced my pump with a somewhat newer pump that i pick up along time ago. when i was doing the motor swap and didn't put it in..
still nothing but cranking though.. mmm
fuel filter ok i guess hehe...

okay update:
i checked my coils and there with factory specs.
same thing with my CAS
but my spark plug wires
the leadings are 9 oms each and the trailing... first one is 5 oms and the second 6 oms
im pretty sure my wires are alright within the specs
anyone want to correct me if im wrong?
