So I got my new starter installed and it went in pretty much just like they all do, but now I have another problem. When cranking it has an odd sound to it, and then right when it catches theres a wicked grinding sound, similiar to if you try to start your car when it's allready running. Im thinking it may not be aligned right and I need to put a shim or two in it, but unfortunatly I know nothing about shimming starters. Anyone with any experiance here I can use all the help I can get, I dont want to majorly damage my flywheel before I can get this fixed.

You shouldn't need any shims, it's a simple bolt on affair. All I can suggest is double checking the mounting bolts again and that the starter mates up flush with the engine/bell housing - it's possible that one of the two bolts isn't completely threaded in, and the starter went in a bit cocked.

Ahhh, that would be awesome as I looked up the process to shimming a starter and it looked like a complete PITA. Ill put it up on the ramps tomorrow and double check everything again.

take it back and have them give you a good starter this time.
it's a possibility the ring gear came loose, but not something you see very often.
