View Full Version : Ignition timing

First: Diagnosis; The starter will turn. I get electricity. There are new spark plugs in the car, which I am going to pull and check to see what type they are and to see if they're covered in oil and/or water. This will be posted later on. I have to pushcrank the car, because It will not crank under its own power. However, when it gets started and settles to an idle, the idle is sortof low, and it burns extremely rich, so this leads me to believe it's the timing, which I have found you can adjust using the crank angle sensor. I have heard that you can time it without the engine running, which will be ideal, as the engine simply won't crank on its own, although it will try. It putters and tries to ignite but stops and I can smell gas. I have heard that you need to get it to idle and warm it and attach a tachometre before you can do it as well. I am here to figure out exactly what I need to do to get this car running in time and running more lean than it is right now, because it will almost burn your eyes its so rich. Any help will be appreciated. I am new to the rotary world, after all. I'm not here to compete. I'm here to learn. Any help would be appreciated, as I would love to have this FC cranking and driving.

Edit: Also, It's missing two belts. The lower one on that rack with two belts on the right, which I think the top is the AC, and the smog one on the far left, if this has anything to do with it.

Do a compression test before anything else.

I would do a compression test as it sounds like low compression. After that, I think the info to adjust the timing is the factory service manual.
