I was told the noise that my diff is making is due to the bearing going bad. I was wondering if any one has a write up or know how to replace them, and exactly what parts I should order before I start taking it apart.

No, this is inside the diff.

The Mazda FSM has all the details to take care of this job.
Only warning about the replacement is the preloaded crush washer in the pinion gear.
Also be prepared to redo the pinion gear to ring gear clearancing procedure which can be a PITA...

Is it better to drop the subframe and remove the diff or leave it on the car??

The instructions are for the rear diff to be removed.
I would think it would be too much trouble to leave it mounted.
I'd think the subframe would get in the way?
Remember, the rear portion of the rear diff has the upper, rear mounts on it.
To remove the internals, you need to separate the case.

If you're asking this question, perhaps you're in over your head?

That was a dumb question I amit now.
After I did a little research I found out a bad bearing my cause damage to the ring gear and pinion. Does any body other the mazda make a replace Ring and gear set for the S4 TII rearend? $750 seems like a rebuild is not cost effective.
