I'm not sure if you have a batteries plus near you but from what i've heard from a few people they can source almost anything as long as you give them the specs you want.

look into braille batteries. not cheap, but I have yet to hear anyone complain about them. I should have bought a braille, but I bought a 51r instead. I regret that choice. Do you want a mildly used 51R? :D
Look for some good cold cranking amps for a given size battery. The more amps the better it will turn over and the better chance you won't drain it trying to start it.
Any battery is going to lose its charge over time. A smaller one will empty itself faster. Its going to be hard to get around this--battery tender could help you out.

I run a Miata battery from the local auto parts store... No issues yet. It starts the car just fine. As stated before...any battery sitting for a long period will drain out. I use a battery tender as well..

I've had my odyssey battery for 5 years with no problems but I use a battery tender also, but if the car is a daily there should be no problems. If anything tenders are like $25 at walmart
