Default oil temp question

what's a good (healthy) oil temp reading during normal driving (cruise), stop & go traffic and on a "spriritted" driving when its taken from an oil pedestal??

I just hook one up (autometer) and needs to know what temp is good and what's overheating.

thanks.

They should be pretty much inline with coolant temps. Anything below 160 is too cold in my eyes and anything above 220 is getting too warm, but nothing to panic about.

That's about what I was thinking, but I was unsure and didn't want to talk out of my ass.

A follow up. After test driving the car a few car in spring weather (53*f-61*f), the oil temp @ idle is 180*f (the same w/ coolant temp).
But after a few hard pull (3 times) the coolant showing 190*f while the oil temp is 200*f-205*f.
I do have an oil cooled turbo only, is this a contrubute factor for oil temp higher than coolant after only a few pull??

A factor, yes, the reason no.

205* is nothing to worry about. I wish my oil temps would get that high.

/\ lol, maybe you went a little overboard, huh T? Also, how about the oil Thermostat you're using? Any plans to make it open at a higher temperature?

------------------
From Grassroots Motorsports Magazine:

One reason for lower oil temps is viscosity. Perhaps try using a high quality, lighter weight oil? It will heat up faster, yet still protect the engine just as well.

If you want to play around with oil viscosity, the oil temp gauge is your best friend.

I didn't go overboard with the sizes based on what the FD guys are running. With the rad yes, not the coolers. I went overboard with the ducting.

My oil pressures are too high so I need to play with the shims in the front covers bypass. When those get to a reasonable amount, I'll play around with the viscosity a little. The t-stat is a 140*, just like the factory, I might swap it for a 180* if I can find it.

You are not using the mocal anymore? Mocal states "The thermostat opens at 180°F/82°C +/-10°F or +/-3°C"

I am still using the Mocal. From what I understand there are two different models, a 140* and a 180*. I BELIEVE that I have the 140*. I will have to check as I know exactely where the destructions are that came with the unit.
