Default Starter problems I made doing something dumb!

Well, I am doing a turbo swap on my S4 GXL. I am using the s4 NA harness. I have everything just about ready to go. I bought a serpentine pulley kit to run instead of the double belt pulley. I have to take off my front main pulley. I tried impact guns, breaker bars, everything I could think of.

I read on the "evil" forum that you could wedge a breaker bar against the ground and use the starter to turn over the motor. I tried this and it went something like this:

Wedge breaker bar against ground, pull plug on CAS and pull fuel INJ fuse. Crank motor. All it did was try to turn, and did not. So, I tried it again. THis time it turned the motor over. (I realized that the breaker bar had fallen off the bolt). I turn the key back to off and the starter keeps spinning!

I jumped out of the car and unhooked the negative terminal from the battery. I then let it sit for a minute, and made sure the key was in the off position. Then i touched the battery with the negative terminal. The starter spins, but not the motor. The starter spins any time I touch the battery with the neg. terminal. The motor no longer spins with it.

What the hell did I do? I have not checked the flywheel to see if I broke some teeth off of it (I REALLY hope not!) I was trying to figure this out and all I could come up with is:

There must be a relay or a set of contacts that welded to each other with the dead short across the starter. If there is, does anybody else think this is the problem?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Rob

Ok I'm no starter expert and I've never actually rebuilt one but.....sounds like your starter iiiis TOAST...lol. But seriously, I highly doubt you knocked any teeth off the flywheel, that would have to be the starter from hell to manage that one. It sounds to me like you just overpowered the starter by forcing it to move too much weight. Whatever it is that powers the gear has probably broken off of it or something like that and is now spinning by itself. Either that or you managed to grind the teeth down either on the starter gear or your flywheel but it doesn't sound by what you wrote that the starter grinded. Hopefully somebody with the correct terms can input on this.

starter solenoid is probably fried

on top of that you dont need to do this for a belt pulley swap, there are just 4 bolts that hold it on. just take those off and swap the pulley.

Take the starter to autozone and have them test it.

I bought the serpentine pulley kit that Guitar Junkie used to make. You have to take the pulley and "hub" off in order to install the serpentine pulley.

Got it fixed!!! It was the starter only!

THanks!
