Default S5 Seatbelt/mousebelt Recall

Nhtsa Campaign Number:
96v173000

Component Description:
Seat Belts:front:webbing

Defect Description:
The Rail Of The Automatic Shoulder Belt Can Wear Sufficiently Such That The Cable Which Retracts The Buckle Assembly Will Become Jammed In The Rail Rendering The Shoulder Belt Inoperative.

Consequence Description:
In The Event Of A Vehicle Collision, The Occupant Would Not Be Adequately Restrained Increasing The Risk Of Personal Injury.

Corrective Action:
Dealers Will Replace Inoperative Shoulder Belts. Mazda Has Extended The Warranty Coverage On The Driver And Passenger Automatic Shoulder Belt Rail And Motor For The Life Of The Vehicle.
_________________________________________________

The above is a direct quote from Mitchell USA estimating system and the NHTSA number is accurate.

All dealers must honour the seatbelt repairs for the lifetime of the car, even if its been done before.

Expect to get a little flak when approaching the dealers on the issue since, well, it IS an old car and the people working the service counter probably aren't aware that what you're telling them is true. So be paitent, and assertive, use the NHTSA (National Highway traffic Saftey Act) number and don't let a little resistance stop you from getting the repairs performed.

Thanks!

I had to have that done after Deals Gap last year. Drivers side came off track. Took it in, got a little grief from one of the service writers. Showed him a couple of printouts I had for it and said you have to do it. He said let me check. Comes back and said it had been done once and couldn't be done again. I showed him the letters again. Fortunately the Parts Dept manager and one of the other service writers who know me very very well walked in. They took him aside and came back a few mins later and said no prob. They even decided to replace the passenger one while they were at it just in case.

I recently had this recall done.. Before they replaced the motor I had a very bad ground while the door was closed. After the repair I thought the ground was fixed. I didn't get in my car for about a week and the battery was dead when I went back.. After I boosted the car and charged the battery a bit I rechecked for the ground.. It draws around .01 v every 5-10 seconds or so. As soon as either door is opened the meter reads 0.00 v. An ideas?

I have had it done on almost every single 89-91 S5 I have owned.
I have never been refused that service from Royal Motors in San Francisco.
And yes, if they do give you static just call +100 to the above.

What do you do if mazda fixed your belts, and they broke a few days later?

The belt light was still on when I got the car back even, I disabled the drivers side belt it doesnt move all the way half the time, the passenger one has been okay though

Don't know if it is "legal" or not, but I got tired of the runaround from the local dealer. And could not order the needed parts as it is a factory replacement part.( warranty issue)

So I converted to the S4 manual seat belts. You need the plastic trim pices that cover the main belt and the a-pillars for a smooth finish( no track seen)

Everything bolts directly in and works fine. I am not telling people to do this! I just got tired of the hassle;.

And the dealer MUST fix it. I just don't have the energy to waste on that argument with them.

You do not need it. You can just reference the recall campaign number.

1989 - 1991 RX-7
Automatic Shoulder Belt
(Recall Campaign #68702)
