My minds tellin' me no...
|
Why would you want to swap in a motor with less initial HP than the stock engine?
I have a Miata, and reluctantly swapped the 1.6 for a 1.8. I wish I could have gone with a rotary swap, but $$$ prevented it.

my na was so slow in the 8th mile it ran a 11.09. that is very slow. my buddies miata ran a 9.5 and drove it in ran a 9.1. but maybe a fresh engine would do better. im really leaning to a 13bt swap.

I-had-a-bad-experience...

but a miata weighs about 500lbs less than an FC... rebuild will be way cheaper and less headache

i thought about it once... mostly because i had an FC shell sitting there and a 1.6 miata drivetrain sitting there... but never really went beyond considering it.

Ive actually heard of a guy who put a miata engine in a FD. I think it was in Alabama but not sure. Maybe someone else here will chime in that knows what im talking about. They supposedly did it just for reliability.

Still, the MS miatas are bad themselves....no point in taking the motors out of them.
I don't understand the point of swapping for equal or less power. All that work for the same or worse power to weight. And isn't the MS 180hp?

Seriously, if your considering to go with a 4 cylinder.
20 valve 4age N/A, or an (stock 210-215) sr20ve-yes VE, there is a mechanical vtec version of the sr20de motor. Those are 2 good very affordable N/A motors. You want reliableish turbo power, sr20det. Those will be worth the hassle and your time. And once the renesis get cheaper, that will be a slamin swap for an all motor FC, and it can be legalized because it is a newer motor of the same type. State ref will pass you. My 2 cents.

a good friend i have was a SR20 freak, when he sold his 240 he found an FD with a blown motor & decided he was going to do a SR20DET swap. he worked at a local performance shop & went on with swap using leftover upgrades. i hated the car & still do
