Parts Interchangeability List
Good Afternoon, this came up just a few moments ago in another thread. So I figured since I wanted the list and I didn't know of one I'd make one. I have limited knowledge about all this so I won't be much help. Anyway, here it is. It's unlocked right now and if this takes off I may start locking it down, especially if problems arise. The reason I may lock it down is for preventive measures. But I'll still allow anyone to edit it but I'll just have to add you to the list.

***S4 vs. S5 Compatibility Guide*** The following are items that are not swappable between generations. Or advantages to swapping a part. Engine and Components -ECUs: Ecus are different between years and models. ECU code listing is listed above under Engine Controls. -MAF sensors: Quasi Swappable. They are of different design, and swapping requires changing the connector as well. Advantages are subjectional. The S5 version takes less space. -Engine (complete): The S5 engines were higher compression motors and are not a direct swap. -NA Manifolds: Swappable with modification. VDI system must be disconnected or modified to operate. -MOP: No. S4 are mechanical. S5 are electrical. -Alternator: No, for one major reason, they changed the plug design for the alt. which is the same as the FD. The S5 alt is a better unit and upgrading to a FD alternator is a good idea for both the S4 and S5. But requires rewiring for S4. This must be done correctly, otherwise you will damage the diodes inside the alternator. -Turbocharger: Sorta. The S4 and S5 have some fundamental differences which make it a little bit of extra work inorder to get to operate correctly. The S4 model uses a twin-scroll system that has a flapper valve inside in the exhaust manifold feeding the turbo. This directs exhaust gas flow to keep the turbo ready to spool. The s5 uses a different method, which at this time, i do not recall. Engine Parts -Housings: There are a few differences: 1. For the Turbo Housings, the S5 rear housing has a threaded hole for the knock sensor. This is on the intermediate plate for the S4 models. 2. The placement of the spark plug holes is different between the S4 and S5 housings. -Rotors: The S5 rotors have a higher compression ratio and lower weight than the s4 rotors. S4 13b 6PI: 9.4:1 compression ratio ~10lbs S5 13b 6PI: 9.7:1 compression ratio ~9.5lbs S4 13b Turbo: 8.5:1 compression ratio ~10lbs S5 13b Turbo: 9.0:1 compression ratio ~9.5lbs Suspension -Rear Sway Bar Links: S5 models use plastic ones, S4's use metal. A good idea is to upgrade to the metal ones. Or buy aftermarket from Racing Beat. -AAS(Auto Adjusting Suspension): Requires all controls to be swapped as well. Can only use factory struts. Not worth the time for the results. Interior and Body Components -The Stereo Surround: S5, made from rubber, doesnt crack like the S4 models. -Idiot Lights and Cover Piece: Not swappble. Different Dimensions. -Tail Lights: Yes, but putting S5 lights onto a S4 requires very minor alterations to make them fit. -Gauge cluster: the S5 models have a different RPM limit (s5's have a redline of 9k) -All body panels, spoliers, and related are interchangeable. -All interior compnonets unless otherwise stated should be interchangeable.

***TII vs. NA Compatibilty***
These must be cross compared to the S4/S5 compat. information. Anything not mentioned, presume swappable. Engine -Engine internals: ------>Rotors: Yes, but different compression ratios. Will need counterweights as well. ------>E-Shaft: yes, but needs rebalanced, unless in the same series of rotors, and you'll need the matching counterweights for the rotors used. ------>Intermediate Plate: Yes, but there may be some port timing differences. ------>End Plates: Yes, but the NA version has the 5th and 6th ports. the turbo models do not. ------>Housings: Identical minus the exhaust sleeves. The turbo sleeves do not have the diffuser. ------>Front Cover: Yes, but the turbo front cover has an oil return inlet ------>Oil Pump: Yes, but there is a difference between the turbo and non turbo pumps. The turbo pump is a slightly nicer improvement over the non turbo pumps, yielding slightly higher oil pressures. -Fuel Injectors: yes, but as noted in sections above, the Turbo injectors where 550cc, and the NAs 460cc. Also, the connectors for the injectors are shaped different for low and high impedance to prevent accidental swaps. -Fuel Pump: yes. TII model flows more. but its better to get a FD pump for cheap or a Walbro or similar. -Radiators: Identical, variance found in manual vs automatic transmissions. -Water Pump: Not swappable. The turbo model has a provision for coolant line running to the turbocharger. -MAF sensor: Not swappable, reads differently. -Coil Packs: They are the same, don't let anyone charge you more for "TII" coils, when they are the same coil, and the same part number as ones from an NA. -Intake Manifold: The short answer is no. as NA models are 6port, turbo models are 4port. The manifolds will not line up when interchanged without major modification. If rebuilding your engine, things can be done to remedy this problem. -Throttle Body: No, reversed design. -Throttle Cable: No, longer for the TII by a significant amount as it wraps around the front of the engine. -ECUS: No. See "ECU CODES" Driveline -Transmission: Yes. TII is a beefier unit. But requires all related parts below in order to be swapped. -Driveshaft: Required for trans. swap. -Axles: Required for trans. swap. -Slave Cylinder: Required for trans. swap. -Differential: Required for trans. swap. Beefier. Has LSD. -Flywheel / Pressure Plate / Clutch: Required for trans. swap. Different diameter. **Supposedly you can use the TII transmission and NA Diff and use an Automatic drive shaft to make it a bolt up deal...not positive, but this has come up several times*** Suspension -Sway Bars:No for certain models. The TII sway bars and the 88 GTU sway bars are the same. I also **believe** that the GXL sway bars are the same too, or at least make a negligible difference in handling. For vehicles which do not have a LSD installed, changing the sway bars to ones from a model which did will cause under steering, as the sway bars where meant to compensate for the effects of the LSD in cornering. Body/Interior -Gauge Cluster: Sorta, the Turbo version has a "boost" gauge in place of a voltmeter on the NA models. The NA can go onto the TII version, and for whatever reason the Voltmeter will work. -TII Seats: Yes. And they are a hell of alot more comfortable. If you see black leather TII seats in a parts car. Steal them!! -Body Panels: all are swappable. Hood is scooped for use with top mounted intercooler. Turbo models for the S5 did come with a front chin spoiler and a factory aero kit. -Chin Spoiler: On the S5 turbo models. Hard to come by, will fit any S5 bumper. may require minor modification to existing bumper to mount.

Low Impedance, I can tell that it told you a while to compile. But as of yet I don't have a real way to give credit to the contributors. I'll look into getting a free wiki or perhaps a blog of some sort and that'll be where the More Info section will come more into play. We'll have the list then after you see what has been claimed to work you can scroll over to the more info column and pull up pictures, procedures, credits, or whatever.. I'm sure there is a much easier way to do this but this is all I have got. I just figured I should I guess warn you guys that ATM there is no way to give credit for your hard work.. But I'm sure you guys are not THAT worried about it. I'm certainly not going to take any credit but as the person that got the ball rolling.

Out of curiosity, what are the differences and compatibility issues between S5 and S4 audio system? I know that the S4s lack the door speakers and that the radio boxes aren't interchangable but what of the other components? Also what are the sound quality differences? I want to get rid of my annoying door speakers so I can have a full-length S4 door pocket, in case anybody's curious. |

If you are talking other car interchangeability, Miata shifters essentially drop in. If you have an S4 this allows you to use S5 through RX8 shift knobs.
And this is how it looks. Red Dog Motorsports Short Throw Miata shifter, Euro RX-8 5sp shift knob. And no the seats aren't purple and don't mind the dust.

I am talking about that. But I already have added information about the shifter.
Does your shifter make a noise? I have not really thought about doing a short throw shifter because there is supposedly noise. |

Nope. When I ordered the shifter I called the local Mazda dealer and got a new set of bushings. Everything is quiet and tight. I rattle really is determined by the car, not the shifters.

you can use a Turbo II transmission with a NA Diff.
The automatic driveshaft fits into the turbo II transmission and has the same mounting holes for the diff, I believe you might need a spacer and longer bolts to hold it to the diff but it can be done easily.

eh, i would be leary about using that method. Sounds like a good chance of shearing a bolt or four. Maybe with some Grade 8 or higher stuff.
