Headunit in an FB

if i remember correctly when i had mine installed i seem to remember something about the installers having an issue with the actual mounting of the HU in the dash. could be wrong tho its been like 5 years

yea the original unit isnt too wide. im more concerned with wiring but i dont think there is anything

There's no wiring harness for the FB. you have to run your own wires unless you feel like cutting up your stock harness and splicing.

im fine with splicing. i wasnt sure if there was weirdness with a factory pre amp

As far as I know, the factory amp has to be bypassed. The best way to do it, is run new wires to the speakers. Especially since you're likely going to replace the stock speakers anyhow.... I believe the stock speakers use a plugin that is not compatible with aftermarket replacements.
Crutchfield offers (last I knew) a dash kit for the 84/85 models, but you're on your own for 79-83. I have no clue if they offer any kind of wiring kit to use the stock wiring. I actually found the radio plug adapter for my old nissan truck hanging on a peg at an autozone, but I had to hunt for the 2 into 1 coaxial plug......

Just bypass the amp. That's what i did. Those old wires were rotting away anyways.

Most of the 1st Gens require the dash to be cut if it has the original P chassis or corporate unit in the dash. Some of the later years like 84-85 will allow you to slightly trim the radio hole and mount a standard Din sleeve.

Due to the age of the car and possibility that it maybe factor amplified it is generally best to go ahead and run new wires for speakers. I thinks some of the very early models used common ground speakers which will not work with today’s modern headunits.

Here is what I have in my notes on the 1st Gen radio stuff, hopefully it will help answer some questions.

Generally the dash kit was for a shaft mount conversion.

i just got the stock clarion working

ummm you dont need to cut anything guys..... all the chips are there more or less, I have a aftermarket deck running the stock wiring, the wiring harness kit works fine, more kits come with a blue clip for the rear speaker. the reason you dont see a blue clip in the dash is because its under the rear bins, all I did was unplug the blue chip from the stock amps and make a extension cable for the chip under the rear bins. its really easy to do. all u need is a male and a female stock 4 pin clip like what you find in the 1st gens and 2nd gens and put them on a long peace of wire. boom done and no cutting needed. I'll post some pics tomorrow when I'm up at my car
