So wait your saying you think your 12a is bad and wanna know if a normal running 12a can go faster then 80? Thats what I get from your post, i would say do a compression check research it because its different then a piston motor(need to read the compression for all 3 sides of the rotor). As for the 12a going faster then 80 it should be able to how much faster im not sure.

A stock 12A that's in good shape should get you well into triple digits.

Best advice I can give with what experience I have. Give it a good tune-up, change all the fluids and run a can of sea foam in the gas tank. After all that find a local rotary mechanic or purchase a rotary compression tester from a vendor on this forum and check your compression. Also look to see if the car still has its converts on it, @ operating temp if they are glowing red you need to gut them or replace them, could be part of your performance problem.

Just start with the basic tuneup items, and chances are you will solve your issues.
Distributor cap and rotor Spark plugs (use NGK, not Nippon Denso) Fuel filter (very important) Air filter Spark plug wires if they look older Also, verify that you have spark on all four spark plugs. Ignition issues are a major cause of low power, but easily corrected. Run a can of Seafoam through the gas tank. When you are ready to look at performance mods, here is the route I took (check out my videos in my signature link to get an idea of what these will produce): 1. Racing Beat exhaust system (about the only RB product I will recommend, and only because there really isn't any other bolt on option). 2. Sterling carb: www.sterlingmetalworks.com 3. Suspension upgrades from www.re-speed.com Best of luck with your new project! ![]() .

just curious if you realize your speed-o only goes to 80 just cause the needle stops doesn't mean that's your speed
just kidding, all the above advice is good.

Check to make sure the linkage for control of the secondaries is hooked up.
Right side of carb when looking at it from right side of car. Where you see the linkage near top of carb, return spring and there is a strange looking setup aft of that. There should be a coil spring around a shaft that has a 'T' nut on it (or it should). That has to be held in place near the top of the carb. The retainer is a fork type setup with a spring attached to it. Sorry do not have a shot of it, but if you check your FSM you will see it. If that actuator is not hooked up you will not have any secondaries and you will be hard pressed to get over 80mph no matter what you do. It will also seem rather gutless like why does it take forever to get to 80? and why is the kid on his bicycle beating me to the next light? If you want to check compression and you do not have access to a rotary tester you can get a quick and dirty idea using your finger and a friend. You can get a good idea by putting you finger over the trailing plug hole and see if there are even pulses. If it blows your finger off and they are even the motor is more than likely not the issue. If they are not even pulses and it does not try to blow your finger off you could be looking at internal problems. Those of us that have done enough of these can tell just by the sound when the trailing plugs are out what condition the motor is in. You can also use a regular compression tester. You need to remove the schrader valve (check valve) you can then watch the gauge and see if you are getting even pulse pressures. For the cold start issue, check plugs, wires and choke system. If cranking slow, battery and grounds. Last edited by rx4ur7; 01-02-2010 at 11:39 AM. |
