Default Anyone ever run a toyota rear axle?

or any other non stock axle configuration for that matter? Im leaning towards the Rx7 for a rally project, but the gear ratios options, brakes choices and parts availibility as a whole lend replacing the oem unit a good idea. Then there always is the less then desireable mazda four link...

I am by no means a suspension specialist. I would love to see some information on what people have done in the rear of an rx7 for uses of handling or even better, rallying. Drag racing will pretty much not apply to what im doing here.

I am pretty set on using the Toyota 8" axles for a variey of reasons. As far as the configuration, i have seen many setups, but ill have to look into what is the "ideal" choice.

Hello Guys

The toyota rears are a great swap, and we have run them in our drag cars for years with great results.
There are two types of toyota rears that you want to use.
one is the 1979-1995 4x4 trucks 6lug, the other is a 1982-1991 1ton 2WD 5 lug they both have 30 spline axles which are almost unbreakable.
The 4x4 from 79 to 1985 is a leaf spring rear so you have to cut minimal bracketry and it measures 55" from WMS to WMS (wheel mounting surface) the 86-95 4x4 are 58" from wms-wms. The jewels are the 1ton 2wd wich are all 4cyl trucks that came factory with a 4speed tranny or a V6 2wd, they are also 30 spline and measure 56 1/2 long from WMS to WMS. (same width as a 1st gen )

Both these rears are 8" ring gears and have a removable dropout or pumkin/center section. Gears are available from 3.42 to 5.77 Spools & posi units are also available.

Want more detail?
The 85 and older rears (55") are best for drag racing due to the fact that the upper control arm will have to be straight as apose to an angle on the stock upper trailing arm. (the bearing cup is long and will not allow you to weld the brackets to close to the axle. So if you want to use the stock brackets and arms from your 1st gen you will need the longer rears from a 86-95 4x4 wich is 58" similar to a gsl-se lenght..
oh and you will have to re-drill the axles to your bolt pattern which any machine shop can do.

the rx4 is much easier since its leaf springs.. any toyota will do but i would go with the 55" narrower rear for wheel backspacing.

Hope i was able to help Guys
God Bless

I know that a narrowed Ford 8.8" rear will fit and there are a few shops that make swap kits that will drop them right in.

I have heard of many successful Toyota rear end swaps & Ford 8.8" for drag race set ups.

Lots of Taco axles in scrap yards since like 40% got scrapped by Toyota for frame rust! The TRD's had rear lockers as well.

hi

have a home brew toyota stout/hilux G series diff ( s2 rx7 discs ) in my rx2
( 1970ish 4wd stout 1350 mm wide and 6 stud from factory )

http://www.rsmotorsport.com.au/techn...yota_Hilux.pdf
all about the aussie G series hilux diffs and what ratios to expect from reading the build plate

and 1350 mm axle to axle

RN10-15-18-20-25 diffs have 940mm spring platform centres and 60mm wide spring platforms
and a 67mm wheel spigot diameter

--------------------

RN40 Solid Axle (leaf) G142: 8.0", 4.87:1, 2 pinions, Open
5x114.3 1410mm drum to drum

hiace
YH50 Solid Axle (leaf) G162: 8.0", 5.28:1, 2 pinions, Open
5x114.3 1470mm drum to drum

=====================

if wanting clutch LSD ( four pinion ) centre
soarer
MZ20 Double Wishbone G295: 8.0", 4.10:1, 4 pinions, Clutch LSD
5x114.3

and for a supra torsion centre ( the end code is a 9 )

JZA70 Double Wishbone G299: 8.0", 4.10:1, 0 pinions, Torsen LSD
5x114.3

or

JZA70 Double Wishbone G319: 8.0", 3.90:1, 0 pinions, Torsen LSD
5x114.3
note :
the torsens require bearing mods to fit into early and non 4wd housings

many US ute equivs use the F series ( 7.5 inch ) diff unless a tacoma or a v6

4wd diffs in same years are 20mm shorter than 2wd
- ie,,, 4wd rn40 diff =1390 mm

6 stud axles can be easily modded to 4 stud old school without welds, lathe the diameter to suit the s2/3 disc hub and lathe off the wheel spigot
and lathe scribe the new 4 x 110 mm or 4 x 114 mm PCD

rx7 use the 1470mm hiace van diffs,, or the RN40's with offset wheels
and oldschool r100, rx2,3 use the RN10-25 series diffs
rx4 would use RN40 series or RN20's with offset wheels
