Default I smell steering fluid...

After driving the 'vert, I smell steering fluid, and it looks like the steering box is leaking.

Is it safe to drive it? Do I need to take it out and rebuild it, or should I just replace it? How the hell do I fix it?

My pump died a few months back, as well as a fitting busting out at the rack. i just pulled it out, unplugged the power steering computer and let it be. been driving just fine. its just kinda hard to turn at a dead stop thats all. i havent even blocked off the old lines. just left em open lol. I actually have another rackand pump to put in but i didnt notice enough of a difference with out to want to put it back in.

same thing happened to me, besides the fact that the PS pump/assembly eventually grenaded itself and broke the pulley, sending bearings into the engine bay, it was fine. I removed the pulley, literally pulled it off with no tools, and left it....drove non PS like that without issues.

Honestly, find the leak and fix it so you don't end up with a broken part on your car.

Which makes perfect sense. They are sacrificing safety either way. lol

I don't think it's the pump, I think it's the rack.

The neck that the fitting screws into broke off on my rack. I just don't feel like pulling mine to put the new one in

Since we are on this topic and I need money for the T2 swap, I have a Manual steering rack for sale, i will sell it to you for a good offer.
