Identifying Transmission/Clutch Noises
Here's a list I made up of the common complaints I saw on an "unnamed" forum.
I Hear the Sound When... Clutch pedal not pressed, or in neutral - Replace the input shaft bearing. Clutch pedal pressed halfway - Replace the throwout bearing. Clutch pedal fully pressed - Replace the pilot bearing. In all gears, regardless of clutch position - Temporary: get better transmission fluid. - Real Solution: transmission rebuild. I Hear... 1st gear whining - Replace the input shaft bearing. Grinding when shifting - Temporary Fix: shift more slowly and get better transmission fluid. - Real Solution: replace the synchros, shift fork, and/or clutch. Notchy shifting - Temporary: get better transmission fluid. - Real Solution: replace bearings and/or synchros. |

-Input shaft bearing is not the same as pilot bearing. There are two bearings that are on the input shaft, one in the E-shaft and the other in the tranny. If you are getting noise with the car in neutral and the pedal disengaged, it is the input shaft bearing which is actually located in the transmission.
-If you push on the pedal to the point where the clutch starts to disengage and it makes noise then it is the throw out/release bearing. -If you push the pedal all the way to the floor and it makes noise, then it is the pilot bearing. -It helps to do them in that order as well. |

Delete this if it becomes a sticky, but I have one for you.
Whenever I am engaging a gear (letting the clutch out), I hear a ping. It sounds like someone hitting a spoon against a metal pole. It only does it in 1st and 2nd, and only does it about 1 in 4 shifts. Seems to do it more the faster I let the clutch out. BTW I have never dumped the clutch, or even barked a tire. Clutch is new, and grips fine, releases fine.. any ideas?

I think I have that same issue.
I got a new clutch kit (from E-bay), don't remember the name, Nov. 2006. I haven't dumped it or used any type of hard usage like that since. And its been daily driven, and I took it to DGRR'07. For the last month its been making weird noises, let me see if I can describe them. When I start out, and shifting into 2nd, Ill describe the sound as a "tink." After that noise I hear a "squeaky squeaky squeaky..." this is at lite throttle, low RPM's, and deceleration. Also on deceleration I hear a lite purring. Weird eh, its like i have an alien mouse-cat in my bell housing.
