Antenna and odd exhaust smell
I know RCC is missing a lot of people but hopping to get some ideas here
I've been helping a friend with his FD. We are doing a full rats nest, rebuilt harness, gauges and basic clean up. Last night we ran across a few things i'm not sure about. First off we pulled the stereo to help with a Defi Din install and found this. I'm not sure how to fix the antenna. For reference this is how they had the stereo antenna hooked up They then grounded it here Onto the exhaust smell. Once the car gets up to operating temp there is a "burnt popcorn" smell coming from the back of the car. I was hopping we could pull the cat and find something in there but couldn't find anything definitive. The only other thing i can think of is the copious amounts of gasket sealer on the exhaust gasket from DP to cat? Any ideas would help greatly. Last edited by Force13b; 04-29-2011 at 12:10 PM.. |

I would say the smell would probably be coming from the gasket sealant. I couldn't tell you why, but I can't think of anything else causing it. It's the only thing that's out of place. I'd say replace the gaskets, make sure to scrape off all the sealant, and see if the smell goes away. If not, go from there, at least you crossed off one suspect lol.
As for the stereo, wow. First of all, the antenna port shouldn't be grounded. WTF were they thinking? LOL That cable goes all the way back to the antenna. They sell entire lengths of antenna wire at auto parts stores, I got mine at Checker/O'Reilly anyway. I'm not sure if the cable is replaceable though. I deleted my antenna and put in a hidden antenna, that's the only reason I know. But it's not too difficult to run the cable back. |

I'm going to give this a try. If it doesn't work new cable or hidden antenna that's up to him. As per the smell we have cleaned up everything as we move along. I took the shilds off the cat and cleaned those thinking maybe something in there was burning off. Hopefully it will be gone once the car goes back together.

Yeah if you can splice that onto the end I imagine it should work. And that would be A LOT easier than running a whole cable haha.
I'm eager to see if the smell will be gone now. |

I'm actually trying to make one good harness out of two shitty ones at the moment for another local FD owner. He had a shitty one, and bought one from someone on 7club for $285 that wasn't any better than the one he already had. I hate scammers. I didn't know Slevin rebuilt harnesses. Good to know. Maybe I'll send him these two LOL. |
