Question 06 Rx-8 start and idle problem

I recently bought a 2006 rx-8, now im having problems with starting it. It starts rough and idles high then dies out. If i give it gas it will stay running, can anyone let me know whats wrong with it. I would like to try and fix it myself before bringing it in. Ive heard it could be the apex seals are worn out aswell. Am i better off rebuilding the engine ?

Thanks

J.king

Coils and plugs are you enemy with a Renesis.

Get a compression test first and foremost. Do NOT spend money on coils and plugs unless you just want to spend the $$$.

Test compression, and test the coolant system. Trust me.

Next in line is the fuel pump. Mine died right before I sold my RX-8.

was it doing this when you bought it or is this a new development?

as said above, check your compression. however, another possibility is your catalyst (because of your coils). when my cat died a few years ago, my car exhibited the same type of behavior.

Is the car throwing any codes at all? The RX8 is pretty wired up so a lot of problems will have a code in the computer. (eg. when my coils died, I was getting a Random Misfire code.)

When you say it starts rough, do you mean it is difficult, or that it shakes? Have you changed anything on the car since you bought it? is it stock? What is the mileage? Any idea on the maintenance history (engine previously replaced, cat, coils, oils and fluids, etc) IF it is a hard start, Before you get a compression test check and see if you have the revised starter, then get the test done. Also check for vacuum leaks, they can cause it to choke like that as well. If all those items check out, there is a good chance its your coils. FYI, Oreilys carries the updated coils for our car for $33, half the dealer price. And they are the same part from the dealer, same stamp on the side, from the same plant, just without the dealer markup. They also carry our spark plugs for $20.

It could be a bunch of stuff. See my post above. Did/does it have a check engine light? If so what is the code? mileage, maintenance, blahblahblah.... help us help you...

IF the car has been "worked on", here's a story for you.... MY history is with RIP it in Ok City... they miswired the second stage fuel injectors with the first stage.... we went nuts for 4 months trying to find what was happening... until we traced the actual colored wires and found "Eureka"!! Had the same symptoms described here.
