If by saying Sport you mean the SE model with the 4-lug wheels, NO it would not have had a LSD.

An 86 GXL with the Sport package (just aero pieces) might have it.

there is an S4 sport model, but i think its only 87-88? they're pretty rare.
its basically a base model (no sunroof, cloth interior, manual windows) with GXL drivetrain (LSD, 5 lug, big brakes). i think they also have the rubber spoiler in back. definately the best starting point for a build.

It's all this confusion about the actual sub-model that has me asking about the LSD. No one seems to have a good answer. Guess I'll just have to crack open one of the diffs. |

A "Sport" model, by definition, has 5-lug hubs with the 4-piston front brakes and rear vented rotors.
This is the top-tier brake package for any FC, which includes Turbo II's, convertibles, 1988 GTU, 1989 - 1990 GTUs, and GXL models. -Ted |

Sigh.....

In '86 there was a "Sport" model. This is different than the bottom end SE model in later years.

I have an 86 sport for my dd, came with all the mudflaps and aero stuff, as far as i can tell nothing says that it has an lsd but it sure leaves 2 marks when i light up the tires leading me to believe its got one. On a side note, when i got the car i noticed the owner before the guy i bought it from had done quite a bit of decent mods including steel braided brake lines and racing beat header bunch of little stuff. So im unsure if it came with an lsd or that dude installed one.

The GXL was the only S4 NA to have a LSD until the 88GTU. The Sport has an OPEN DIF.
I grenaded the output shaft on my 86Sport and tore the dif down. It IS open. I have the a scan of the original 86 brochure, but the GXL is the only model with a check mark next to LSD. |

The quest for more torque

Yes, I have a friend who bought an '86 sport brand-new. I assure you that they are not LSD from the factory.
Two black marks does not indicate LSD, my '91 is as open as can be and still lays two marks. Jack the car up, put the transmission in neutral and turn a rear tire forward, if the other side turns forward, probably an LSD, if it is stationary or turns backward, it is probably open or worn out.
