Default Hello everyone

Hey everyone, I'm Anthony, i just bought a 1988 Mazda RX-7 GTU N/A. It had a rebuilt engine 12k miles ago, the body has 105k on it. Havnt really had any problems with it yet which is great!

This is my first rotary car! It has custom headers/straight pipes which make it quite loud, plus a cold air intake.

I'm quite a noob at all this and am really trying to learn more! I want to buy a cheap turbo to put on it, so what is everything i would have to replace to be able to handle a turbo, also is this an acceptable one for the price?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...#ht_3090wt_892

BTW Sorry if it's wrong to ask questions on my intro thread!

Thanks for your help

That system is for an FC that is already turbo, as an upgrade. It would still take alot more effort to get it to work.

If you want boost, do a TII swap first, then go from there with upgrades. Search around, a turbo swap is pretty damn easy.

Welcome to the board!

Welcome to the forum. How comfortable are you with modding your car? Not that you can't turbo your 6 port NA, it just would probably be easier to do a 4 port turbo swap like djmtsu said. You could always leave that car NA, do a few mods & pick up a TII as a second car.

Alright, that seems expensive. Thanks for the welcome btw. I guess what im trying to get at is what would be the best way to get the most power out of my 13b n/a for the least amount of money/easiest method?

A TII swap is going to be the best bet.

When I did mine, I did it the real easy way, and used the NA driveline. All it takes is to use the NA flywheel bolted to the TII engine. Now, with that said, I don't drift or drag, so my NA trans/rear end held up just fine with no issues. However if you are hard on your car, they won't last long.

Search around, sometimes like Kevin at Rotary Resurrection will have complete drivetrain swaps for sale. Pretty good deals too, an his stuff isn't junk.

So does a turbo swap mean getting an entire nother turbo engine? I'm sorry i really don't know much about this at all. What is the best placement for a cold air intake on this car? What are some things i could get to make the engine look cleaner/better looking?

Like in this picture...what is the name of the bar that i circled?

That is the front strut tower bar. As far as the NA goes pick up an exhaust from the header back. Some sort of intake, suspension & clutch/flywheel will get you started without cracking into the motor for porting. Nothing crazy, but these will improve your overall performance.

Yes, a TII swap is a whole new motor. The turbo engines are 4 port, NA engines are 6 port. A cold air intake won't help as much as you would think on an FC.

If you want to clean it up, and live in an area with no emissions, strip all that crap off.

If you keep it NA, ditch the stock intake manifold and fuel injection and go with ITB's and a Megasquirt.

Have fun, check out the FAQ at the top of the 2nd Gen section for a whole lotta information!

Although none of us have done a max effort 6-port NA, I am reasonably convinced that 200 WHp (250 Hp) is the pie-in-the-sky limit for a streetported 6-port.

I have heard rumors (never seen dyno curves) of 175 WHp out of a stock 6-port, but I don't know that I believe them. I made 155 WHp (almost 200 Hp) with a 6-port NA using the same setup as my 216 WHp 4-port. I might have been running a little rich, but not 60 WHp rich

Basically, the 4-port makes more power than the 6-port naturally aspirated, plus is configured with the oil and water supply for the turbo and the lower compression rotors to support the boost. 6-port engines are only used because they are cheap.

Here is a comparison of a stock 6-port and a nearly stock 4-port:

In the defense of the 6-port, it had 185,000 miles on it and was completely stock (s4). The 4-port had a mild streetport and had about 7,000 miles on the rebuild.
