Default GSL-SE Cold Start/Idle Problem

1984 GSL-SE, 100% stock, 215K miles, 89 octane petrol
New plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter, TPS adjusted
Problem same before and after tune-up.

Cold Starts --- Revs up then dies. On second, mostly third try at starting it nearly dies (all warning lights flash on then off), then idle is rough until it warms up.

Warm/Hot Starts --- Starts like new.

Warm Driving (no AC) --- Runs like a champ (Hey, it is a champ!). Idle solid at 800 rpm.

Warm Driving (with AC) --- Runs great when driving. At stops, idle is low and very rough. Almost stalls but hangs on but remains rough. Idles better with clutch pedal depressed.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I just had the same problem with mine.. Its the fast idle cam on the throttle body. I havnt had time to look at mine yet but I was informed on the other forum that simply giving the car 1/2 throttle tap before starting it will move the fast idle cam into the correct position. This weekend I will look at mine and see if there is a actual fix for this problem. Hope that helps

Also sounds like the idle air bypass (BAC?) is failing/plugged. The warm idle with ac issue is key here....

Make sure with cold start as above, tap gas pedal once to set choke (throttle up). There is an adjuster screw but if this just happened then that is not the problem. Check the operation of the linkage and make sure it is moving smoothly.

If you brought it into the shop the first thing I would do-
Check compression cold, just for grins, 215k I would like to know, then check it hot. I have seen really low compression cold and then it picks up a lot when hot. 200k is the life expectancy on the first gens. Had two here last year, 230K and 206K. Still running strong, leaking a lot of oil but still running, still had decent compression. Completely worn out inside, rotors and eccentric shaft were the only things we could have used. Apex seals were ~5 mm. The 230K was being driven between Phoenix and Tucson occasionally. He dropped it off then took the 93 FD back. It was his ,bought new in, 83 that we restored. If there was a 2003 7 he probably would have bought one. Didn't want an 8.

Sorry guys, back to issue at hand

AC on issues-
Check BAC and system, (AC related)
check Vent solenoid valve
check Air supply valve

I have been able to clean the BAC and ASV to get them to work again. On the ASV, there is a little sleeve that comes out of the solenoid, push it back in.

Cold start issues-
Nut behind the wheel and cold start procedure - above
If that is correct
Injector operation- sticky or bad flow cold - bad connector or wire (personal experience my own) broken underneath insulation. Fuel leakage
Check water thermal sensor
Fuel pump switch in AFM
Fuel pressure
Check TPS, not setting resistance readings cold

rough idle
vac leak
BAC system (AC related)
ACV - see if there is any air coming out the acv at the hose going forward
AFM
IAS
Vac switch
Fuel Pressure

At this age and mileage anyone of these could be an issue. Weird idle issues hot and cold have been linked to the ASV, VSV or BAC. Personal knowledge.
