I did forget you mentioned that switch. Is it possible it's bypassing the high speed fan relays and your just stuck on a lower speed?
In my experience typically (but not always) if there is air in the system, you'll hear that boiling sound after shut down. And while the car is running you see spiking of temps...not so much a steady rise as you've described. I also don't see how heatsoaking of the aluminum IC ducting could have anything to do with it. But I can't think of anything else to suggest. Sorry.
