I don't honestly see that as the case despite everything that's happened. The RX8 produces the most N/A power of any other rotary vehicle that's been built by Mazda to date. The handling and performance characteristics make it a real contender on the track.

The issue with the motor has been addressed and was related to there not being enough OMP output in the lower operating ranges of the motor or the fact that people are not driving their vehicles in RPM ranges where carbon deposits are removed.

I've currently got 80,000 miles on my RX8 which is a 2005 and I'm still on my factory motor, factory tranny and factory clutch. I believe the survival of my motor has been due to pre-mixing, using high quality synthetic oils, and a combination of increased OMP from the accessPORT and injecting 2 cycle via the sohn adapter.

This is all with my RX8 being my daily driver and seeing moderate track use from autocross to HPDE.

I have no doubt about the quality of the car. It simply requires some extra care and good quality stuff.

There have been plenty of issues with the previous generation RX7's that people seem to forget. All vehicles are prone to problems.
