Default S4 Headlight switch & Plug into S5 Harness... HELP!

Ok, so my car has a wierd issue. The Previous owner spliced in an S4 headlight switch into the S5 harness. This is not terrible, because the S5 harness "extension" from the dash harness to the switch is removable.

This was done really bad, so I tried to fix it, and now I have a few issues:

Headlights work
Motors work
Rear window defrost stays ON if I press the switch
The Illumination does not work, even if adjust the dimmer
all fuses related check out ok

now, when I rewired it, I noticed that most of the wire colors match up, but a few were different from each other.

I got another working S4 switch to test, and both do the same thing, so it's deff a wiring issue. I got both the S4 and S5 headlight switch circuit wiring diagrams printed from alldata, but I cant make much sense of them.

does anyone else have experience with this? It doesn't look like I fried anything, but w/o the gauges lit up, I cant drive at night.

Thank you,

Max.

I will include colors, scanned wiring diagrams, and pictures tomorrow....
