Removing the power steering

If you know the series I will be racing this car in, you know I can not spend a great deal of money, so...

I have been told that I can remove the power steering pump, belt and the hoses, then connect the two pipes on the box together to keep any pressure differences to a minimum and I can run this way forever.

Currently the pump is crap and leaks like crazy anyway. I like the feel of the steering without the pump, but yes it is a little stiff at low or no speed.
