air intake ques?

I have an 85 GS that I bought last fall. I recently did alot of mechanical and some modding to get it running in tip top shape. My buddy said he will cut in a hood scoop and mig weld the air cleaner box so that it lines up with the hood scoop so fresh air can be pushed into the engine. Has anyone ever did this to their cars. I'm thinking it will be like a cold air intake on fuel injected cars. Does this sound like a good idea?
