Question Factory Adjustable Rear Struts Q/A

I got a set of factory adjustable struts for my GXL (87) from a friend that didn't have high mileage on them. Yesterday I took the ones off my car, which were not adjustable and one was blown to replace them. While taking off the stock coils to put on my lowering set I noticed the shocks had no umm... compression..? they just decompressed all the way, i assume they are bad.

Why am i posting this? My question is on the the adjustable suspension the mechanism that adjust the struts stiffness are absent do the factory struts hold no compression? I am by no means a strut guy so i have no idea... Normally struts compress then expand back out (varying on the struts how far they compress). Would those adjustable mechanisms make a difference or are my shocks crap?

::Posted here since my post is 2nd gen specific.
