Default HOW-TO: Tuning the TPS with a Multimeter

A lot of people complain about the dreaded 3500RPM hesitation. The car stumbles, doesn't accelerate or just bucks when you're on the gas and most of the time it's caused by a TPS out of the stock specs. Afterall, remember that these cars are old and things will fall out of tune as time passes. All the information I've posted can be found via the FSM (I call it the ROTARY BIBLE) but posted it here so searches can yield good results. If you have corrections or additions please add them. Enjoy.



Step 1
: KNOW HOW TO USE A MULTIMETER

It's preferable to use an analog so you can test for deadspots (basically to know if you should replace your TPS) but the digital one will be fine too.

Step 2: Do you have an S4 (Figure 1) or S5 (FIgure 2)?

Step 3:
Go out to your car and test your TPS
Your car must be fully warmed up before you adjust the TPS or you won't be setting it correctly. I recommend you have a second person in the car to help you.
  • no throttle should fall within the specs in the figures above.
  • Push the throttle all the way down to the floor and it should fall within the specs above.
  • (if you're using an analog MM you'll find dead spots easier) slowly go from no throttle to FULL throttle and look for dead spots.
If you don't know how to manually adjust the TPS see the diagrams in this thread.

Plug it in and go for a drive. Your car should no longer stumble unless the problem wasn't the TPS.
