Default TII trans

will a TII trans work with an N/A motor?

yes but you need the proper turbo flywheel and clutch compoenets. Also you need to find a solution to the fact the transmission is longer so the na driveshaft wont work and the Turbo shaft wont either.

I don't think the trans is longer, it's more of an issue of the splines are difference between the N/A and TII trans and the flange on the diff is different as well. So there is no stock driveshaft that will work. Mazdatrix has a few driveshafts that they offer that will solve the problems.

What you need to make the trans work with the engine is the proper counterweight and flywheel. S4 and S5 counterweights are different weights and the n/a vs TII flywheels are of different diameter. So you need to match the couterweight to the series engine and the flywheel to the trans.

You'll also need the proper sized clutch disc and PP. Obviously these are specific to the flywheel.

You'll also need the correct starter. Again, specific to the trans.

the transmission is actually longer as well. Another option is using a T5 adapter. See the trans and diff faq.

Or once I acheive full apocalyptic evil genius status I can build you a 6 spd that will bolt right in.

I've got both a TII and N/A driveshaft kicking around, I think I'm gonna have to measure them. I think it's like a 3/8" difference. The trans is not longer in the sense that it won't fit though or the shifter won't line up.

Here is what you need to do it:

TII trans
TII clutch slave cylinder
TII flywheel
TII starter

And from what I have seen (and done) a vert driveshaft might work for you.

Instead of swapping flywheels & clutches, you could order a clutch disk for less than $100 with the T2 spline pattern and the NA diameter. There are quite a few places that could build this for you, or Mazdatrix sells a 6 puck with this setup.

If he has an N/A flywheel and wants to use a TII trans, the starters won't line up with the flywheels. He'll need a TII flywheel to use with the TII trans. The N/A PP that he currently has will not fit on the TII flywheel that he'll need to get to use with the TII flywheel if he's using the TII trans. N/A clutchs are 225mm diameter and the Turbos are either 240 or 235.

So, to the best of my knowledge an N/A PP will NOT fit on a TII flywheel. So, to add to DJ's list, you'll need to add a disc and PP.

Out of curiousity, what is your reason for wanting to upgrade? If you want an NA transmission, go to eBay and buy one for around $75.00 any day you want one.

The turbo transmission will require a custom driveshaft to connect to the NA diff (different splines). Plus it will require a lot of electrical work (the wires for the reverse lights, 5th gear switch and neutral switch will not reach). The NA trans will take NA power just fine (if it starts out in good shape).

I have killed two of them, but both were old to start with and I am making 160 Wlb-ft of torque (200 Lb-ft at the flywheel).

vert driveshafts are just the same. An automatic driveshaft may work though

you are saying that the drive shaft from an automatic will allow you to use a T2 trans with and N/A engine (as long as the clutch/ flywheel is correct)??

I ask because I have both the T2 trans and an auto drive shaft in the garage.

Thanks

My buddy's just went out and i have a spare tii trans and i was just gunna let him buy it off of me. but since it would be easier and chaeper for him to just buy an n/a one he'll just do that.

You can get such a driveshaft from Mazdatrix and all I had to do for wiring was to extend 4 wires and change a connector, not really what I'd call "a lot of electrical work".

Yes it has the right connections for the TII trans and NA diff, but it's really too short to be a decent solution. You can probably find a driveshaft shop in your area that can extend it for you though to make it a proper solution.
