Default Using Emissions solenoids as a Boost control solenoid

I need a simple boost control solenoid and I'm curious if the solenoids from the Emissions rat nest could work for my application. I'm planning on running the manifold boost pressure to the solenoid and have the solenoid activate or de-activate airflow to the 6PI. Will it work, or should I invest some money in to a new aftermarket boost control solenoid?

Is this a boosted 6port setup? If so, then the short answer is yes, I played with varying the opening RPM for quite some time on a 6port turbo setup, eventually I settled for around 2900rpm. I reused the solenoid I had left over from the original S5 setup for this, I don't think the pressures will be too much to use any of the others so long as you get the proper operation you want.

Yep, that's pretty much what I had used, except it was a S5. I was using an RPM switch to toggle the solenoid for me, I had boost fairly early so I was opening up quickly. The best thing to do is adjust it about 300 rpm or so and see where the 'sweet' spot is for your boost, if you open too early you can lag it a bit, and if you open late you can kind of choke it off. And since it's not like the air pump or anything else, even while cruising/pulling in the higher RPM band there wont be pressure to open so it'll give you slightly better cruise and accel from a roll.

How big of a turbo were you running and were you running the 6PI inserts or not?

Did you ever dyno it? I'm just curious to know what your torque curve ended up looking like.

I don't have the graphs as it was about 5-6 years.

well is my theory correct: Since we're turbo charging the torque curve becomes more steep since boost is built at a specific rate. Using the 6PI system would allow to flatten the torque curve significantly while still allowing full power developed at the same time as normal.

I'm wondering about the potential of the 6PI system and the full use of tuning with it.

The effects are somewhat two-fold. It'll spool your turbo slightly quicker which will bring the torque curve on earlier, while also keeping velocity high in the low band which helps bring the curve itself up. Fine tuning the point where your best gains are is somewhat trickier as it varies largely on the conditions, but typically I try to mimic your most 'desirable' gain and set it to that. For example, if you want mild throttle torque and spool you can set your RPM switch later, if you're dead set on rolling from a stop you can open it early. You just have to do it and dial it to your likings, although sometimes it's really hard to see/feel the difference until you've gone too far in either direction.
