if you would like to take out the cat, and do not want to have an overly loud car, you can get a "presilencer" from racing beat, which is specifically engineered to muffle a rotary engine.

rotors excite me

I think it'll hum more than buzz, but the rotary emanates smooth vibes. You'll probably be fine. I'd take the suggestion of installing a Racing Beat presilencer, it's like a glass pack I believe, but will withstand the higher exhaust temps the rotary produces and should give you a nice tone. A standard glass pack will quickly melt out on a rotary, one reason they're known as thermal reactors...

Sigh.....

I have the stock system except for a straight pipe where the cats are. It's my understanding that both the Borla mufflers and header will make your car louder than my stock mufflers and stock manifold. As it is now, I feel it's bearable, but for any sort of extended drive (i.e. highway) it gets to be a bit much. However, I don't have a radio so there is no drowning out of the exhaust.

I have gutted stock Cats before and it was just fine =)
Pretty loud and throaty on idle but the car was much faster!

The quest for more torque
|
I ran Racing beat headers through a straight pipe to dual Dynaflow (piston engine-straight through) mufflers on my '86 when it was N/A and the clutch fan was still louder than the exhaust. My '91 is WAY louder than the '86 ever was with full racing beat exhaust except for the stock catalytic converter between headers and y-pipe (I am sure that a lot of that is the useless slush box between my eccentric shaft and drive shaft).

Open piped NA is retarded loud. I loved the sound of it for 10 minutes before I wanted to blow my brains all over the interstate.

Yeah, when I was running my n/a open manifold, You had to stand at the end of the driveway and yell at someone to carry on a conversation while the car idled in the garage. Doesn't help that the idle was 11-1200 rpm at the time . It scared the hell out of my cat too, whenever I shut it down, she would come up from the basement and look around like "Did the world end?"
